Authenticated outgoing mail server?Hi there,
I have BellSouth (AT&T) DSL in Atlanta GA. I can send mail fine as long as I don't use authentication on the outgoing mail server. However, I want to use an authenticated outgoing mail server, so I don't have to change server settings when I'm on the road.
First things first - getting it to work at home, where the BellSouth connection is. I have spent hours on the phone with BellSouth, and no matter what we try, we cannot get my mail to send using authentication.
I have mail.bellsouth.net as the outgoing mail server, and I have my user name & password correct. We have tried several different ports, (25, 465, 587, 992, 995, etc.) with and without SSL. Basically they have told me that, since I can send without authentication, it's not their problem.
Anybody got any ideas? |

Authenticated SMTP is not supported on Bellsouth/ATT's mail servers. It's a bit disturbing that you were forced to waste such a large amount of time on something that isn't available. Support should know these things. |

Hmmm. This link seems to indicate that, not only does AT&T support it, they require you to use it: "AT&T has upgraded its network and now requires SMTP authentication and has blocked Port 25." » support.att.net/bellsout ··· ddb9a759 |

From the site, and absolutely not the case here:
What happens if I don't set up SMTP on my email program?
* Your emails will time out when you try to send them. * You will be asked for a password every time you try to send an email. |

There are definitely some contradictions. What's your source that BellSouth does not support authenticated SMTP? |

Use their new SMTP server:
SMTP: fmailhost.isp.att.net, SSL, port 465 POP3: fpostoffice.isp.att.net, SSL, port 995
They work for bellsouth.net and BellSouth att.net email addresses. |

My source is that it does not work when tested.
Put whatever you want in for username/password. It will accept that and deliver the mail anyway.
If it was working, the above would fail. |
