If the laptop is connected through wireless internet, you probably won't be able to. Although in THEORY a 802.11g connection is 54 Mbps, you never get that much. For starters, it is only half-duplex so you will have 28 Mbps max to start with.... IF you are right next to the router. If you are a room over, you'll probably end up with anywhere from 10-25 Mbps, and looking at your speed, that's what happens.

Okay.. I come home from shopping at Walmart and my internet connection is down.. my modem lights are flashing off the hook. Gaming has been ok, I know there's not much of a difference between 15-20ms and 30-38ms, but I do notice it when playing CS 1.6. I did this a few years ago when a friend was having cable connectivity issues, and we weren't sure what the problem was. He picked me up and I brought my modem with me to his place, and we unhooked his modem, replaced it with mine temporarily. My modem connected right up, and provided me with my 4Mbps/512kbps service I had at the time, which was faster than what my friend had at that time. the connection was rock solid while we were on my modem. the next day, my friend got a new modem, and because of what he saw from my modem, upgraded his speed tier as well. It makes for a great way of locally troubleShooting issues such as the odd one I'm having with my upload speed.

Yes that helped alot. Those were the kind of readings I got from the time I got my service until about a month ago. I don't know if it's my modem, my local node, or what, but on most uploads, I've lost a good 500Kbps of speed, and now consistantly only get 1.3Mbits/sec or about 165K/sec on upload. I'd love to either have someone that's got 15/2 bring their modem over to my place so I can see what we get when on the same node with another user's modem, or I'd also if I could, would love to bring my modem somewhere else here in the Antelope Valley to see what I get for upload with my modem. It's almost as if my uploads have been throttled back to about 1.5Mbps instead of the 2Mbps they should be. But what's strange is that I've verified that my modem's configuration is still set to 2048000BPS upstream, which is what it should be and what it's always been set to. Also my signal levels I've verified are quite good as well, and they haven't changed either. Yet sometime during the 1 week I was away, something caused my upload speed to go from a solid 1.8Mbps or so down to 1.3Mbps, and I'm not sure what the cause is. If 15/2 comes to residential users, I hope you don't experience this oddity. Interestingly, I did a skype file transfer with a friend that's 2 miles from me, and got the full 2Mbps upload speed. I uploaded to him at 240 kilobytes/second, but FTP uploads to other nearby sites won't break 170Kilobytes/sec. We in San Diego got upgraded in January and the speeds have been steady at 15/2 - 24/7 ever since. The excessive download speed showing is due to powerboost.

Grounding is required for more than one reason.
I had SC Edison's 16kV line (underground) short and burn up AT&T phone lines up to my grounding block at the house (charred insulation / melted sheathing, required external rewire). Similarly from the house side, its similar. Many (older) homes have or had antenna. Take a guess what lightning can do w/o grounding. W/o proper grounding, line voltage will float (bad) as it can/will build up a charge. Some devices are more sensitive than others to ground, and will not work properly. Analog devices may 'hum' as MacLeech described.

Sigh. I know they can't snap their fingers and have it all done, but there's so much missed potential across the board.

And since they just introduced PowerBoost, and they got their engineers fixing up old Adelphia networks just to be able to offer 12 more HD channels.... I wouldn't bank on anything happening this year.
