My DVD Burner Won't Burn Anything Over 60 Mins Long

-
Okay I have a frustrating problem. I'm converting old VHS family tapes to DVD's on my DVD burner but anything over 1 hour is not completed and the DVD burner simply never finishes the job, the DVD's cannot be seen. Why? Don't DVD blank discs have 4.7 gigabyte capacity? My 2-hour VHS tapes only take up about 2.5 gigabytes. The longest VHS tapes I converted was a 90-minute one. I can only convert 1-hour-long videos into DVD and then the disc is full, why?

My VHS tapes are recorded into my harddrive as MPEG's videos by the way.............

What software are you using to burn?

I'm using Pinnacle's Studio 11 "Instant DVD recorder", but I also have Nero but since I'm not PC savvy I do not know how to use it, it's not user-friendly and it simply does not offers me a way to burn a DVD, it only has the choices of "data transfer to CD" and "data transfer to DVD" and "back up files to CD". Nero doesn't have a choice of "burn movie to DVD".

From searching I found Pinnacle only allows 60 minutes when set for full quality.

I'm sure someone will be able to offer you help with Nero or suggest another software without the time limitation.

Ok..I know you've been in a couple of forums already..but the best place for converting VHS to DVD would be Audio/Video Chat forum..

Basically, you need to convert those mpegs to DVD (.ts & .vob) format, then burn that to disc.

Two to get you started-- for video conversion, AVI-Demux:

»mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home/?p···avidemux

For burning, ImgBurn: »www.imgburn.com/

There are tons of others. Both of those are free, btw.

The bottom line here is that DVD "high quality" uses 4+GB per hour of DVD video. Once you've captured your videos to disk, you need to find a utility that allows conversion to "standard play" which is the 2 hour mode or one that automatically fits your video(s) to a standard size (4.7 or 8.5GB) DVD. I've found nothing better (without spending hundreds) than TMPGEnc's DVD Author 3, or for a simple solution (no editing features), VSO's ConvertXtoDVD.

Thanks to everybody for the great answers and alternatives, what would happen if I simply downgrade the quality of my videos transferred from my VHS tapes to my harddrive? To make the space-gigabyte consumption smaller? I'm using a Dazzle device (ancient, from 2001) to import my VHS tapes into my harddrive and it has a selection menu what quality I want my videos in, I could downgrade that quality no?

Yes, you could downgrade the quality recorded it records with. You have to determine how low a quality you can stand to have by testing it.

If you have Nero installed, there's a good chance you also have NeroVision installed - check the start menu for it. NeroVision should let you add the video files and convert it to DVD format and fit the files on a standard size DVD.

Nope, there's no NeroVision, just crap like "NeroSmartEssentials", "NeroBackItUp" and "NeroCoverEssentials".

What a crappy, useless program this Nero is. I had DVD-burning software that was way better back in 2003 with my HP Pavillion computer.

Strange? What version of NERO do you have? I have Nerovision on NERO 6.

Jason13

@rogers.com

It doesn't even says what Nero version it is, it just says "Nero" on the icon and when I click it the program opens but there's no version detail anywhere on the interface.

Go to Help then About Nero and it will tell you.
