| Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. Over the the weekend I won a a fleabay auction for a New in Box Motorola High Speed DSL Modem Model #2210-02-1006 for $43 including shipping. AT&T-Bell South wanted $75.
When it comes in, I plan on telling Charter to stick my last $54.95 internet only payment where to sun down shine, and with their high prices, frequent outages, and poor customer service, it is time to say goodbye.
Where I need you guys help is on what I need to do to set up my new modem after I place my order for Xtreme DSL direct online.
I plan to use my current Belkin Router and not go with the ATT&T Home Networking since I only run 2 computers.
Is there a step by step in this forum on how to program in this new modem?

| Your best bet would be to make sure that your FastAccess DSL Direct runs as expected and is stable before dropping Charter.
It would also be in your best interest to promptly pay your bill to Charter. You don't want to get a reputation as a "Deadbeat".
First you will have to create your FastAccess DSL account.
You will do this by using the CD or the online method.
More info to come. | |

| Just kidding about the Charter comments, and I have never been late on a bill in the 2 years I have had them as a provider.
How do I get the FastAccess DSL Direct to operate without dropping Charter?
Will I have to wait until AT&T/Bell South sends me a cd when I sign up online with them, and then use the CD to create a FastAccess DSL account?

Does anyone know how I would get the FastAccess DSL Direct to operate without dropping Charter first, as it is hooked up to my current modem?
Also, how long does it normally take for AT&T/Bell South dsg dept. to provision the line?

If you configure the motorola for ip passthrough, you can switch between cable and dsl by changing which modem is connected to the routers wan/internet port.

One other thing you should check out is the nid and its wiring and test jacks.

| Re: Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. There is a place on the outside of the home where the telephone cable from the street connects to the phone cable for the house.
If the cables are still connected as they were when the house had bellsouth dialtone no problems.
If changes have been made after the bellsouth dialtone was disconnected you may need to make some changes.

| Re: Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. Yes, if your dsl order goes smoothly once the dsl is active the modems dsl light will be steady green.
If that does not happen you could take the modem to the nid if you have one connect it to the test jack. If the modems dsl light is not steady green at the test jack bellsouth has not completed the work.
If the modems dsl light is steady green at the test jack you need to connect or repair the inside wiring.
This faq has some excellent info and pictures: How do I check modem stats, synch rates & speeds at NID
Hopefully you won't need any of this information and the dsl just works.

| Re: Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. I tried plugging in the data cable into the wall outlet plug and then the other end into the modem, and all that lites up is the green power button on the modem. I will try it outside in the test jack tomorrow, but I think I will have to place the order first before they cut the juice to the test jack. If I am right about this, how long does it generally take for them to make the dsl active after I place my order on-line for the Fast Access DSL DIRECT? | |

| Re: Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. Yes you will have to order it forst, but ususally the line IS active by the time the modem arives.
If you already have a compatible modem, it could be working as short as 24 hours after order.
Though I have heard mixed things as to wheater you MUST ust the install CD these days. Used to be if you knew what you were doing you could jsut set up a network connection and skip all their BS (not meaning Bell So ) software. -- »haywardm.com (Hayward's Key West)

I purchased a new in box AT&T Motorola High Speed DSL Modem Model #2210-02-1006 from a fleabay seller for $43(AT&T/Bell South wanted $75). It arrived yesterday and a AT&T FastAcess DSL Instllation Wizard Disc came with it. I am hoping with the help of the informational links from this forum and the nice helpful people in this forum I can get it up and running myself.
Someone told me I can get my AT&T Motorola High Speed DSL Modem up and running while keeping my Charter internet for now. I do not understand how I can do this since I will have to program my computer setting to accept AT&T/ BellSouth instead of Charter.
Could someone please explain how that can happen?

| Re: Taking the step to change internet providers, and need help. What do you have on your computer 'set' for charter?
Generally, with cable and dsl your get your connection to the pc through an ethernet cable that connects to the modem. The modem handles all communication between your lan and the ATT network so your pc just has to send/receive through the ethernet cable. To use a different network, you just swap the ethernet cable to the other network. Nothing has to be set on the computer. Just run that disc or look on here for how to do the manual installation.

Currently with Charter I have my ethernet cable line coming from my cable modem to my Belkin router - from the Belkin router I have ethernet cable lines going to my Desktop PC, Printer, Vongage Modem, and my Netgear 102 wall plug.
I just checked the test jack that in a Bell South box outside my house and the modem DSL light does NOT come on at all, (not even a flashing red light) meaning there is no juice coming to the house whatsoever.
Can I still set up the modem without any juice? If so, tell me how, because if I unhook my ethernet line going to my Desktop PC from my Belkin router I will no long have internet to direct me to info from this forum.

| You should take a phone and plug it into the test jack at the NID and see if you have dial tone there. Even if there is no service, there should be a dial tone. You should be able to dial 911 at the very least unless AT&T has disconnected the line somewhere.
Then check inside the house for dial tone at the jack where you intend to connect the modem.
If you have no DT at the NID, you will have to wait on a truck roll before you can do anything else. If you have DT there but not in the house, then you have an internal wiring problem, which is your responsibility unless you have POTS service and the inside wiring plan from AT&T. The inside wiring plan does not apply to DSL. -- Best of luck

I have never had AT&T/BellSouth services, ever. The lady that owned the house before me had BellSouth for her home phone only. The line must have been shut off after she moved, as there is no Dial Tone from any outlet wall jacks in the house, or the test jack in the nid outside the house.

Please do me a favor and disconnect everything from your modem except the electrical power cord, and tell me if any of your lights come on besides the solid green power light?
Thank you in advance. | |

2 edits | I don't believe what we thought the Diagnostic LEDs were supposed to do and what they really do jive up.
When I had my line problem I caught my 2210-02-1006 in various states of failure and the Diagnostic LEDs didn't jive up with the failure mode.
Your modem is probably just fine.
I tested mine and when I insert the power adapter plug into the modem the Power LED turns Green then Red then Green. This means it passed the Power On Self Test. No other lights would come on. It has been sitting there with only the Power LED on for about 30 minutes now and not a flicker out of any of the other Diagnostic LEDs.
. .
EDIT: I also did a full factory reset on the modem and repeated the test with the same results.

Forgive me for my sense of urgency about my modem working properly. When you buy something on fleabay that has a problem, there is a very short time span to do anything about it.
