 When Free means Fee!

If Cablevision's Wi-Fi was truly free you would not have to be a Cablevision Broadband Subscriber to use their Wi-Fi Network. In this case you have to be paying for a Broadband Connection in order to use their Wi-Fi Network. Therefore there Wi-Fi Service is not free!

OOL is overpriced to begin with. This service is not free, it's expensive.

They can make it an additional fee in addition to your OOL fee if you want.

Read, slowly....

Free WiFi access exclusively for Optimum Online customers in thousands of convenient locations.

They never said: "Free to anyone".

If you are a subscriber, and you don't pay anything 'extra', and you can access this WiFi network, then to you - it indeed is "FREE".

I fail to see your point? They are adding Wi-Fi for THEIR customers at no extra cost. That = free to me.

How is it overpriced. It is cheaper than Fios and cheaper than most other services across the country.

It's not "free". It's "included". There's a difference.

My DSL is $32 per month. FiOS is $43 per month. OOL is $45 per month.

Your DSL is slow. FiOS is 10/2 with a contract. OOL is $45 with no contract. They cost the same as any other cable company, $45 for regular internet, $60 for faster speed. Regular speed is 15/2, faser is 30+/5. I'm paying $63 + modem rental for a Comcast connection that isn't even as fast as the lower-end Cablevision tier. Seriously, they're overpriced? THey provide more for your money!

I for one think doing a muni WiFi network for customers of your service is a fine idea, and 1.5 Mbit symmetric service wherever is enough to get most things done. Most AT&T/T-Mobile hotspots don't get up to that speed. Basically the premise is this: with FiOS you get internet to one location. Sure it's wicked fast but it's also a little on the expensive side and once you get out of your own WiFi coverage you're gone. ith CableVision you can move into an "extended service area" where you still have internet, without having to buy any extra equipment. Sounds like a win to me.

DSL Optimum online

Optimum online is 15/2 which beats 10/2. The difference is 2 dollars in price. When you are talking about bundling discounts it is cheaper for most people since they usually want cable TV service and voip. I don't recall people getting a bundling discount with Verizon if they chose voip over POTS. FIOS definately wins out in the higher speed tiers though.

Whether CV is faster or has free included WiFi is irrelevant to me, as I can't afford $540 per year for their service.

I don't want faster, I want cheaper.

It is a free addition to the existing schedule/properties of the service.

Or, bandying the semantics a different way - it's a free addition to the service, or is "now included at no extra charge". Spin it any way you want. From a marketing perspective it's free.

Then your DSL should suit you well. It's cheap but it's not fast. Problem is, DSL around here is neither cheap nor fast...starts at $40/month for a 1.5 connection!

It does. $32/month for 3 Mbps / 768 kbps. That's fast enough. I can download a movie in a little over a half hour. I have no need for anything faster.

I made the comment because of the title of the article: Cablevision Lights Up Free Wi-Fi
A more accurate title would be "Cablevision lights up Wi-Fi access to subscribers at no charge."

In which case I applaud your thrift. I like watching movies streamed from my own router-attached hard disk, or maybe backing stuff up online, or downloading large MP3 albums (for the college radio station I work at). So basically I take all the speed I can get, as long as the rice is below, oh, $70 a month. I also use VoIP over the connection, and the savings of VoIP alone pays for some of that conection cost.
