And if we don't have it copyrighted, which I presume in most cases is everything done on the browser, then it's back to the original "perpetual do anything Google likes."

The way that copyright law reads, the minute you create it you own "it". Whatever "it" is. It needs to be registered within 90 days of first publication if you would like to sue and actually get damages.
