Its not a bad thing.

But you're right... money talks. Gives one something to think about.

I also have not been very politically active before. Our recent little "Net Neutrality Rally" made me realize how apathetic we all really are. Frankly, I was disgusted at the low turn-out. I anticipated a crowd overflowing the Parliament lawn right out onto Wellington St. We're quick to rant on our keyboards about social injustice; but when called upon to actually get off the chair and do something, we shirk. To be honest, were it not for the fact that I live in Ottawa, I'm not sure if I would have bothered to attend the rally. As it turned out, it cost me a vacation day off work and about $20 in gas, parking, and snacks (no, not Timmys!). Wow, what a sacrifice! Now I can go back to just typing my indignation - confident that I did my part?

Well, if I took away anything positive from that experience it was discovering that there was at least one person inside that building who vaguely understood the issue we were there to support; that was Charlie Angus. Unfortunately, I do not generally share his party's view of the socialist worker's utopia, as I also do not share the ultra-conservative "geschaft uber alles" attitude. The German word for "business" is "geschaft"; how appropriate :D. Too bad voting wasn't more like ordering pizza in that you get to choose what crust and toppings you prefer; as it is, you're forced to take the party's combo platter; the pineapples with the anchovies.

Where am I going with this? Oh yeah, money! Since we can't rally enough people to show up to barely impress the government in power, what else can we do?

- We can punish the businesses that we feel are not playing fair by refusing to buy their products and encourage our friends and family to do the same.

- We can support any politician who shares our view, beyond just voting for them. You can be a volunteer in their riding office, or donate funds to their campaign. It doesn't have to be the limit allowed by law; that might attract an RCMP investigation. $50/$100/$200 whatever you can spare. You can do it with a credit card on a web site. For Mr. Angus...

Debating political philosophy on the internet isn't going to do squat to change anything! If you think the NDP is the solution, or just that having Mr Angus in the parliament is a good think, then put-up or shut-up.

Cities, provinces/states and federal governments compete with one another to attract businesses ( i.e employers) to their jurisdiction. Maybe it isn't fair, but that's the way it is.

W.R.T. Mr Angus... Yes, I really think he is doing a great job for us technology geeks and I would like to see him retain his seat even though I would dread the NDP getting too much power.. So here's a challenge... If you'll contribute to his campaign, I'll match it. I think the limit that an individual can contribute is $1000. I'm good right up to that. That could buy a lot of lawn signs :D

MIghtyCicero : In the past I voted for the Bloc because I found they did a good job at really opposing (key word) the government and representing the interest of my province and the values of its people. But this election I believe I will vote NDP. Not because I came to dislike the Bloc but for two other reasons.

1) So far I really like the way Charlie Angus is interested in our telecoms situation. He seems very intelligent. I saw him on CPAC talking about the government inability to function and for some reason he didn't come across as a 2-face politician like so many. Also, Jack Layton always came across to me as a good honest guy and I would not be afraid to have him as opposition leader/prime minister. I look at Harper and all I see in his mannerism and the way he talk is hidden agenda and deceits.

2) The NDP when you start looking at their ideas is really interesting. Their policies are really geared toward the people. I believe that includes human-sized corporations too. I think we should not be afraid to listen to them for once and let them have a go at it. Why should we vote liberal or con just because of the perception that only they can govern? Two parties always create corruption. Just look at our neighbours to the south. Diversity and fresh ideas is where it's at!

So I'll watch how the election campaign goes and see if my strong preference toward the NDP this year will confirm itself.

---- SMALL RANT : (I find that even the poor or middle class lift their nose to social policies parties like the NDP fearing that it will impact their income/lifestyle, seemingly believing that THEY are not just "the people" and somehow big business interests are their interests. Liberal, Con/reform have always been big business oriented and people always fell for the hypocrisy of their promises.)
----- END OF RANT

Traditionally, they have always been there to defend the rights of the commom folk, against the "big-pockets", and they don't believe the rich should get richer, while the poor (in comparison), get poorer, carrying a large tax burden, while the MAJOR corporations get off easy in endless tax breaks. The NDP were the ones who instituted *social housing* back in the 70's and 80's, while the Libs and PC's turned a blind eye to the needs of all the people that lost their jobs and homes, during their rotating terms of administration. Bob Rae was a total f-up as a leader (still is), and for certain the NDP's never planned that they would actually get in at the time. The Lib's brought in the *temporary* GST (ya right), and the PC's if they were elected, would abolish it (ya right again). Nothing but a big freakin money grab to ensure pension funds would be plentiful for retiring MP's. Something is definitely wrong with this picture.
