Weird issue with ABB modem and router

Hello. Well, I recently signed up for ABB HSI service, on 8/512. I have 2 routers, a WRT54GS using DDWRT v24 firmware and a WRT54GC as well as 3 other computers. The modem is a SBV5222

The problem started when I tried to use the DDWRT one, I set it up to DHCP (auto). for some reason the router detects the internet connection but the reported IP is a private address (216.x.x.x or close). Then I tried to use the WRT54GC, it works BUT the speed goes down from 7 - 8 to 1.5 - 0.4 (mbps). The 7 Mbps I get it ONLY if the computer is connected directly to the modem.

I need to be able to share the internet conection over a wireless link, a computer always on is out of option since they consume too much power. Any ideas?

PS:

1) cable - SBV5222 - DDWRT router (DHCP) - computer (DHCP/static) = (no internet)

2) cable - SBV5222 - WRT54GC (DHCP) - computer (DHCP) = very slow internet (about 1.5 Mbps)

3) cable - SBV5222 - computer = full internet (current configuration)

Thanks.

Did you try and clone the computers mac address to the Router? What settings did you change in the DD-WRT setup?

well, the good news is that the router works fine now, it actually shares the internet connection using the MAC from the wired NIC (thanks for the tip!!). But, for some reason, I still cant get the full 8 Mbps. On the PC I can get almost 7 Mbps, on the router only about 4 Mbps. Is there anything else I need to change to improve?

If not, I guess I can live with that, better than 1.5

EDIT: The DDWRT is using DHCP mode (auto), nothing else has been changed.

It kind of is difficult to say what the problem might be but it sure is the Router. I used DD-WRT for some time and then switched to Tomato. Do you have VoIP phone service by any chance? Did you double check that everything is on default? How about QOS? In most cases it should be disabled except if you also use VoIP phone.

Maybe you have more luck at this 2 websites:

mmm odd... while the speed tests show speeds up to 4 Mbps, I'm getting downloads within the 6.3 Mbps range. I just downloaded the SetPoint (logitech) and it kept a constant speed @ 775KB/s.

Yes I agree, maybe the router is doing something behind the scenes or maybe its firewall related (I've been having attacks on port 1434 as reported by kaspersky, hopefully now with the router in place, the attacks should stop once for all), QoS is disabled on the router.

I find very strange that the modem required a computer MAC instead of the router MAC, even when I followed procedure when changing the cable (power off both, change cable, power on modem, power on router/computer) maybe the modem just plain doesn't like routers but your solution was perfect for the situation. Specially for a modem for which there is practically no info (a search on google redirects here to DSLR and Motorola's user guide and there are no articles with reference to this problem anywhere)

Thanks for your help. I'm sure a lot of ABB customers will find this information useful when they setup they network.

The SBV5222 has an annoying habit of not clearing the MAC address from the previous device on reboot. If you call ABB tech support and ask them to "clear the host", the modem will successfully bond to the next device presented (router, PC or whatever).

Cloning the MAC address may get the connection to work, but it can cause confusion if support is needed, it looks to tech support like a PC is connected when there actually is a router there. That can be misleading, so be sure to mention the router to tech support.

Ok, but that is the weird part: when the modem was unpacked and installed the first device connected to it was the router not the computer. The technician connected it himself. He did not test the connection though. I guess he relied on the lights indicators on the modem itself.

After I was unable to connect using the router then I plugged the computer. But the first MAC present for the modem was the router and then the computer.
