yes, but how many subscribe to a data plan?

What's tricky about the ComScore stats, is that it likely includes subs who have the nice 3G phone, but don't use 3G service.

Stats on subs who actually use a 3G service, are all over the place. It's hard to get a real read on that.

Yeah ... there's a huge difference in devices/technology.

U.S. CDMA (Verizon / Sprint) probably have +3/4 of their devices with CDMA EVDO (3G). AT&T has --

Some European carriers are similar, in that most of the phones they sell are 3G-capable- the biggest example of this is the company "3", which only operates 3G networks and doesn't even have 2G.

True... but I don't think that '3' makes up ~50% of European users.
Verizon + Sprint CDMA 1x/EVDO ~= AT&T + TMobile GSM/3G

Good point... especially when you consider Alltel into the mix.

If you use GSM (umts) then you are using 3G voice. That is not the same as Cdma (evdo), since evdo does only data.

Yes, but is UMTS voice something for the industry to get excited about? I think the reason these types of stats are thrown out is because everyone is looking to data to be the next revenue generator.

Well alot of people have 3G phones, but using them for voice only. Not knowing or caring that they are 3g

Wrong. GSM is clearly 2G while UMTS is W-CDMA = 3G

In fact all you have to do is check most WM phones: you can select if you want to use WCDMA/UMTS/3G or stick with GSM by default for voice.

I don't know what you mean by "lot of people" but it's unlikely - if you list the phones on att.com or tmo.com most are still 2G only...
