Is it possible to send email through the comcast email server from a different internet connection? i.e. not connected to comcast but to my work internet connection.

as far as i can tell no. however they have webmail so if not at home or at a home that has comcast then just sendmail using the webmail.

Yes it is. Just visit »help.comcast.net and follow the links for HSI and email. There are a bunch of configuration guides for popular clients.

Essentially you set up your client to use port 587 or 465 which works when you roam on other networks.

I looked at their help online but cannot find any reference to sending email from another ISP.

Yes. These headers are old, but things haven't changed, much:
See the line with 'megumi'; an SBCIS (at that time, it is now ATTIS) connection to the Comcast message submission server.

Comcast has gone over to using annoying Flash presentation of their help pages; makes it hard to link to the exact page with the relevant information. But it is there, in the links bigchris See Profile has provided.
