Wiring Question for FTTN

How would I run a new cat5e from the NID to the RG. I was thinking about moving the RG so I may have to replace the existing homerun, but I don't know how to physically wire them at both ends such as which pair to use. I would also like to know how to terminate directly to a RJ 11 plug vs RJ 11 jack.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Wiring Question for FTTN

Kinda depends on how they utilized the existing Cat5 run from the Nid to the RG.

I was recently installed (Uverse with VOIP) and ran cat5 from the RG area to the NID and another to the phone block in the cellar.
The installer decided to just use two separate pairs on the Cat5 to the NID to a) feed the RG, and b) backfeed the phone to the nid and then from there back into the original phone line to the cellar. So my run from the RG area to the phone block in the basement was un-needed.

You can probably check what pairs are used in it out at the NID, and also how those pairs are terminated at the existing jack.

It does not matter as long as you are consistent and make sure you use the same pattern on both ends.

You don't terminate cat5 into RJ11. You need RJ45 for that.

Re: Wiring Question for FTTN

You can terminate a Cat5e cable with an RJ-11 plug, I have several times.

Well I think that is RJ25 or something, but not here to debate that kinda junk.

I think the OP needs to be a bit more specific on what they meant by plug vs. jack.
Are they trying to run the homerun from NID to a wallplate?

You can probably find all you need at home depot or lowes and if you can find the parts to buy you can read the package on how to do it. Not rocket science.

Does the RG need CAT 5e from the NID? I've got a 2-pair CAT 3 run from the NID, and can't imagine that I'd need to upgrade for a Uverse RG (considering that Uverse is delivered over a standard copper pair to the premises).

If using CAT 5e, instead of 2-pair CAT 3, you would probably want to go with the standard telco pattern, instead of the 568-A, or 568-B Ethernet pattern: Blue/White on the inner pair, Orange/White on the next pair out. Leave the other pairs (Green/White and Brown/White) as spares, or for other purposes.
