| Comcast to carry HD NET, HD NET Movies and HD NET On Demand Posted at Engadget HD
HDNet, HDNet Movies coming to Comcast Today, September 04, 2008, 9:20:00 PM | Richard Lawler Filed under: HDNet, Cable, New content
Add two stations to Project Infinity, Comcast has -- after several years of battling -- signed up Mark Cuban's HDNet and HDNet Movies, plus a free video on-demand package. Specifics on when the channels should go live in your area weren't noted, only that the cable company plans to increase its carriage of the two networks over the next year. Hopefully Comcast subscribers will get a (non-bandwidth starved) peek at Dan Rather, HDNet Fights, early movie premieres and more before tru2way and switched digital video roll out, but we can't be sure. -- I ain't got time to bleed!

parts of the Chicago area still don't have the new HD channels.
how much will they compress them?

| Re: Comcast to carry HD NET, HD NET Movies and HD NET On Demand Those are perfect questions to ask the VP of operations for YOUR area. This isn't satellite, the local chiefs have control. I can't imagine these channels to roll out in a higher priority than some channels already released with higher advertising revenue. Can't wait for it on-demand | |

| The official press release:
First paragraph says it all:
"HDNet, the leader in high definition programming, today announced a carriage agreement to add HDNet and HDNet Movies to Comcast's strong high definition (HD) programming line up. The agreement enables Comcast, the nation's leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services, to provide the two HDNet networks to HD subscribers in many of its systems, including free On Demand programming, in addition to increasing Comcast's carriage of HDNet over the next year."
That means, HDNets available this year in Boston/Chicago and the areas in PA that Comcast Guy is always referring in his postings. My area? Fuggetaboutit..... For crying out loud, we have yet to get A&E, Food and channels that have been widely available in other Comcast systems for over 1 year! Great news is the free On Demand programming, though! -- COMCAST of New Jersey II(Union) - Verizon DSL You want more HD? Then e-mail Rick Germano - Go to Contact Us in the Comcast web site. And don't complain when analogs are removed! Digital isn't the future, it's the present!

Just a theory, but it seems similar.

| Re: Comcast to carry HD NET, HD NET Movies and HD NET On Demand We have HDNet and HDNet Movies on the old Patriot Media System. Comcast did not get rid of these channels like GameHD. However, the channels are in a special $1.99 tier with Wealth HD. The $1.99 covers the carriage cost. I suspect the new deal will put HDnet in digital starter and HDnet in a higher tier similar to Directv.
Hell did not freeze over. Comcast is waking up to the fact that many subs have a choice of four TV providers and Comcast has been losing over 100,000 video subs per quarter not including acquisitions. Competition is great for the consumer.

Also keep in mind - we already had these in Springfield BEFORE CC took over from Insight at the beginning of this year. Most Insight properties already were carrying them, so I presume that all of those systems that cc took over kept them as well.

| We already get them here in Minneapolis area and we enjoy them - It is about $5 for the two channels per month I think or maybe a dollar more can't recall off the top of my head - but they show some good movies which we both enjoy - we noticed them on the guide when we bought our HDTV a few months back and asked about them. | |

Connecticut only saw Phase 1 of the migrations, there are more planned or being planned. Systems that have the bandwidth will see them faster than those that don't. -- I ain't got time to bleed!

3 edits | Has anyone heard of launch dates yet? I was hoping we'd these channels would start rolling out in some markets by Nov. or Dec.
I had HDNet channels previously on another provider, and absolutely love this network. They do a FANTASTIC job re-encoding older movies to HD on HDNET Movies (eg. The Sting) and have amazing programming on HDNet (eg. Dan Rather Reports & Arrested Development reruns)
Please hurry, Comcast!!!

| Re: Comcast to carry HD NET, HD NET Movies and HD NET On Demand I don't know. Thought you guys didn't have too much available bandwidth, and they are rolling out DOCSIS 3.0 first because it's more profitable than rolling out new HD Channels. So most likely 3 more QAMs will be dedicated to internet. DOCSIS 3.0 starts eating into plant bandwidth much like VOD. Fios has it made because their internet and VOD bandwidth doesn't cut into the forward video bandwidth (and they don't even have analogs cutting into that bandwidth).
Say you have the minimum, 4 QAMs for VOD and 3 QAMs for D3. That's 21 HD channels at 3:1 lost out to bandwidth wasting VOD and Data. That's why I thought it would be great to at least run data in the 870~1 GHz band so it doesn't affect the normal forward video path. That of course would mean spending time and money upgrading nodes and amplifiers to pass 1 GHz. Not something Comcast wants to do.
