It's the equivalent of moving the modem and plugging it into a different box... an xbox, a different pc... everything you plug it into has a different mac address, and pulls a new IP from comcast. Those are probably set on automatically acquire ip and DNS from comcast, and vista might not be. Go to start, Control panel, Click network and internet (make sure on the right you're under control panel home, not classic view), click Network sharing center, click Manage network connections on the left. Right click on Local Area connection, whichever says connected when the modem is plugged in.. and hit properties. On the list that comes up, double click Internet protocol version 4. Check obtain automatically for both boxes, and then click ok until you're out of all the windows. You need to find your command prompt. In vista you can click the start circle and in that bottom search box type in cmd, it should find one result.

Click on the result and you should see an old looking DOS style command prompt, this is where you type in the
ipconfig /all
and hit enter
Then post the results here.

I'm confuzzled.. That is not a CDV telephony type modem such as an Arris.. So, do you have 2 modems, the DPC2100 for their HSI service, and another modem for their CDV service ? If so, which modem are you trying to connect the Vista box to ? There is an important reason that this is being asked.

Also, you did not post the requested output of an ipconfig / all.

I don't normally connect more than one computer--hence no router. I'd also want to make sure I can get the laptop to connect to the internet before purchasing one.

I can get the laptop to show that it is connected to the internet (and run "diagnose and repair" and receive a "no error message") But the max time that this status lasts is only lasts for a few minutes and even if it says it is connected I can't load a webpage on the browser.

I've plugged in the laptop so it is not a "sleep" issue.

I had some freeware installed (avg, comodo) that I removed in case there was a compatibility issue---but it still does not work.

I've never had problems connecting over a wireless connection (but I don't have one in my home).

I've run diagnostics on the ethernet and it connects properly.

When I try to repair the network-- I receive a dns error. Then it appears that I have internet access for about 5 seconds (I can't load a webpage but the "connection icon" on the bottom right corner of the screen switches to "local and internet."
