It's the equivalent of moving the modem and plugging it into a different box... an xbox, a different pc... everything you plug it into has a different mac address, and pulls a new IP from comcast.  Awhile ago I used to just be able to reset the modem to get a new IP, and i contacted comcast because that stopped working.. that's how I learned about it.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/0"><b>anon</b></A> : You're other boxes are working fine with the modem probably because they're settings are different than your vista machine.  Those are probably set on automatically acquire ip and DNS from comcast, and vista might not be.  Go to start, Control panel, Click network and internet (make sure on the right you're under control panel home, not classic view), click Network sharing center, click Manage network connections on the left. Right click on Local Area connection, whichever says connected when the modem is plugged in.. and hit properties. On the list that comes up, double click Internet protocol version 4.  Check obtain automatically for both boxes, and then click ok until you're out of all the windows.  Reset the modem and see if it gets an IP.]]></description>

In vista you can click the start circle and in that bottom search box type in cmd, it should find one result.<br><br>Click on the result and you should see an old looking DOS style command prompt, this is where you type in the <br>ipconfig /all <br>and hit enter<br>Then post the results here.  <br><br>Chances are that your vista machine is not getting a valid ip address because you dont have a router and comcast will only dish out a couple of them (1 or 2) and your xp and game console probably have the reserved slots.  A router alleviates that and allows all devices to connect.]]></description>

I'd also want to make sure I can get the laptop to connect to the internet before purchasing one.<br><br>I can get the laptop to show that it is connected to the internet (and run "diagnose and repair" and receive a "no error message") But the max time that this status lasts is only lasts for a few minutes and even if it says it is connected I can't load a webpage on the browser.<br><br>I've plugged in the laptop so it is not a "sleep" issue.<br><br>I had some freeware installed (avg, comodo) that I removed in case there was a compatibility issue---but it still does not work. <br><br>I've never had problems connecting over a wireless connection (but I don't have one in my home).<br><br>I've run diagnostics on the ethernet and it connects properly.<br><br>Ugh.]]></description>

Then it appears that I have internet access for about 5 seconds (I can't load a webpage but the "connection icon" on the bottom right corner of the screen switches to "local and internet." Then it reverts back to a local connection only before I can access anything on the web. I'm connecting through a comcast cable modem (no router). <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/0"><b>anon</b></A> : I am not receiving an internet connection when connecting my laptop (running vista) to the modem (comcast internet).<br><br>I have tried unplugging and resetting the modem. This has not helped. If I plug my desktop (windows xp) or playstation into the modem they are able to connect to the internet.<br><br>Any ideas on what I can do to solve the problem? I have tried "ipconfig /flushnds" but it does not solve the connection problem.<br><br>When I try to diagnose the connection it just says "dns error"<br><br>Any help is appreciated.]]></description>
