jsteve : Yeah they are. But they're also somewhat modular so you can use one powerhead with a different cannister, etc. You don't necessarily have to get all the attachments. Also, I referenced the Callisto one since it seems closest to what I have since the Solaris one I have they apparently no longer make it. So, I was looking for whatever was the same in watts and features. If I were in the market again, I don't know if I'd get the Callisto exactly, but I'd get another Miele for sure.

I was going through $200 price point vacuum cleaners about one a year before I switched to a Miele.
ArthurS : The cool thing about the Dyson is it's serviceability. When we had our Eureka vacuum, the belt for the brush kept breaking on a regular basis, it was a real bugger to replace. With the Dyson, in addition to all the pipes being able to be taken apart very easily to clear up any clogs, all the major parts of the vacuum are very accessible, not that I have had to replace anything yet after 2 years of faithful service. The other big bonus is the cyclone design and hepa filter, this vacuum does not leave you in a fine dust cloud after you vacuum the house, an important feature for me being allergic to dust.

kristimyers : We bought a refurbed Kirby G4 on ebay about 5 years ago. It cost about $280 shipped, with all the attachments. That little machine has held up very well under the burden of 3 long-haired dogs. It has required one repair - a $15 fan replacement - in the time we have had it. (And we caused that injury by vacuuming up an allen wrench.) We used to pick up a $100 something-or-other vacuum - a Hoover, or a Fantom, or something like that - and it would break within a year. Our Kirby has served us well. I would never pay full price for a new one, but I have found that there are good deals to be found on the refurbed/rebuilt G4s and G5s. And they are self-propelled and light enough to carry up the stairs with one hand. (I am a petite female who works out sporadically.)

But if it ever breaks, I am totally getting a Dyson - the little one with the ball thing.
rip_sketches : My mother has been independently cleaning houses for the past 15 years now. The worst brands of vacuums she has ever bought were DirtDevil, Eureka, and sub $100 Hoovers in that order.

Commercial vacuums were never an option for her since she worked alone and needed to be able to haul around a lightweight but decently sized unit in and out of her car and houses and up and down stairs 2x to 3x a day.

Dirtdevil's would always fail ~6 months no matter the price or "features" and claims of durability, usually parts would break off and motors would die in that time frame. Plus then tended to be the heaviest units.

Eurekas seemed to always start having grinding noises from the motors about 3-6 months in but would last about a year before motor failsure. And the cheapest Hoover units acted about the same as the Eurekas.

She always kept the price of purchase around $100 since she expected them to fail, but the mid to high range Hoovers and some off brands like "Panasonic" seemed to serve her the best in the years she's been cleaning.

And I may get blasted for this, but after 15 years she discovered there was a direct correlation between the length of the cord and how long the units life expectancy was. The longer the cord the earlier the vacuum tends to fail on the motor.

And in the end what does her unscientific experience come down to?
You always get what you pay for so don't buy a cheap vacuum.
