anon : Interference is a serious problem--regularly overlooked and dismissed--which Verizon and DSL subscribers cannot eliminate but can at least manage and minimize to some extent. There are many sources (e.g., microwave ovens, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, fluorescent lights, TV and radio transmitters, street lights, high-powered transformers, high-tension lines, electrical conduits, even metal pipes acting as RF antenna, etc.) just to highlight some of the more common sources of interference. The further away you're from your CO, and the longer your loop length, your line will have greater exposure and be more susceptible to any and all types of interference.

When I first signed up for DSL several years ago, I had constant disconnects on my connection for the first month and a half. I went through the typical lengthy and torturous rounds with the Verizon Customer Support from hell. It was not until one experienced service tech that came out, and was familiar with the local area, that told me immediately upon his visit the real cause of my disconnects. The problem was with a local low-powered ethnic radio station transmitter that I wasn't even aware of which is located within a mile of my home. I would get disconnects from 7AM to 5PM daily--that's when the station boosted their broadcasting power during the day. That service tech cleaned up all the outside wiring connections leading up to my NID and installed a whole-house filter/splitter. This provided an improvement but there were still random disconnects. Verizon did all they could.

I then ran a dedicated and direct home-run between the NID and my modem using Cat-5e cables, with shielded twisted pair wires, to replace the regular telephone wires. I also experimented with various DSL modems that I'd purchased off eBay since I went through several 327W modems that Verizon had sent for solving my disconnect problem without success. I found that some modem models performed better than others. I selected and used the modem that provided the best performance for my connection (i.e., 2200 in bridge mode with a separate Netgear wireless router)--certainly it was not the various Versalink versions that Verizon was shipping at the time. My connection has been rock solid ever since...
