I suspect that the chips were relatively cheap, and since UMTS is a bit more of a 'global' standard than EVDO, it is being promoted. At one time, the same statements went for WiFi. I do suspect that it is being subsidized by the wireless industry in general though.
Laptops typically have a life of ~ 3 years... not that much different than that of a cell phone.

I think the biggest reason to have an integrated card is if this gets sold subsidized by cell operators with 3G service, as Dell is talking about doing- in that case cellular operators wouldn't want you to have flexibility. |
