[XP Home] Disk Defragmenter could not start.

I'm having problems with the built in defrag utility. It loads properly, and works fine on the secondary partition. When I select the primary partition and click on [Analyze] or [Defragment] I get a pop up window that simply states "Disk Defragmenter could not start."

I tried that advice given here >> »www.andreasroom.com/blog/archive···rag.aspx

and here >> »forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-20···art.html

but no difference.

No errors in the event viewer. I get a similar error when trying to run an error check: "Windows was unable to complete the disk check."

No, that would prevent it from running on the second partition. Also, when it is disabled an attempt to run defrag returns no error at all.

Ok i see but if you run it from the command promt it will give a error like this if the dcom is disabled.

Windows Disk Defragmenter

Windows cannot connect to the Disk Defragmenter engine.

From the command prompt, it returns,

"Disk Defragmenter could not start."

DCOM Server Process Launcher is set to Automatic, and running.

Can you run the following command from a command prompt to check for dirty bit set on the drive (this is assuming the C: drive):

fsutil dirty query C:

What is the output of that command?

Ok, that's good.

Can you see if you can start the Disk Defragmenter in Safe Mode.

When was the last time you was able to defragment the drive?

Did you install sp3 ???

I would try running it in safe mode as auggy See Profile suggest.

If you cannot i wonder if it would run from safe mode command promt only.

I don't know the last time it was defrag-ed. A long time ago.

SP3 not installed.

Same exact thing in safe mode, both GUI, as well as command line.

Try to run a chkdsk /r on the drive:

Start > Run > cmd > OK

Then type at the command prompt type (assuming the C: drive):

chkdsk c: /r

Press "Enter"

Answer y to the message "chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?"

Exit cmd.exe and restart the computer.

Running a chkdsk /r has the potential to take a long tome and it is a good idea to back up critical files beforehand.

Ok, so I did as you said. It responded appropriately, except that after reboot, after showing the Windows logo, it went to the light blue screen with some words on it that seemed to indicate tat it was starting chkdsk, but it only lasted a second, too short to read, and then went on with the boot. No Check disk was performed, and no errors.

My neighbor's PC had a similar problem two weeks ago and he called me for help. In addition to defrag not running and not giving error messages, I found chkdsk not working as well as MS updates, Norton AV was disabled as well as live update, and finally web pages were being hijacked (HOSTS file was empty).

It turned out that the PC he had several viruses and trojans. (I can't remember their names).

The solution involved running hijackthis and researching what was installed on his PC then manually deleting the offending executables. It was at this point I could run Norton liveupdate to update the virus definitions and then run the virus scan on his entire PC which fixed several more problems. Doing this allowed the defrag to run as well as chhdsk and MS updates.

I would try running a complete virus scan on your PC and go from there.

Ah yes, looking at this further, I do seem to be having some issue with my browser taking me to pages that I didn't ask for. I'm gonna defer this issue to security cleanup. When I'm done there, I'll come back and we can resume if I still have the issue with defrag.

I really appreciate the help!

Similar problems have occurred with use of SpyBot. Maybe if you uninstall it, assuming it is installed.

Thank you all so much for your input and help. The problem I described was in fact caused by a mal-ware issue. Malwarebytes tool solved the problem.

Thanks again.
