Breeds? Capitalism is greed. Greed is what makes it work.

And in some cases like this, people get screwed because of greed.

Real capitalism is about competition not greed. If consumers have more then two choices then the quality would be higher and the prices would be lower.

Thats crap, in this industry anyway. Competition, in theory, is supposed to bring prices down. In 90% of the country prices have gone up. Thats Colusion. By its very nature, competition eliminates opponents to the point where theres only one. Then you have a winner, or in this case, a monopoly!

Wrong. Capitalism is always about greed. Always. Greed is the engine that powers capitalism. Competition's benefits only come from greed. In a competitive system, each company involved would have a motivation to lower its prices to get more customers, until the point where the price of getting new customers outweighed the money those customers would bring. In perfect competition, a theoretical situation where there is an infinite number of companies, the price would descend to the point where economic profits (which is revenues minus all costs, including the opportunity costs) would be zero.

Obviously the broadband situation is not exactly perfect competition. Still, greed is the basis for capitalism.

I respectfully disagree with your absolutist position on this issue.

Exactly... the only 'true' competition is when everything else is highly regulated, and you have to be creative. With an unregulated market, greed drives competition into packing up their 'war chests' with $$$ for large lawsuits to either payoff lobbiests for their interests, sue them out of business, or ensure that the playing field isn't level. You can not be in this kind of business unless you're willing to take risks, and play dirty.

Most large corporations don't want to _really_ be the only business in many markets, unless they have no regulations to deal with... and then its charge as much as people are willing to pay.

He just disguises the terms- for example, the quote "Endless win-win transactions are the basis of capitalism, not greed."- the motivation for making "win-win" transactions are both parties greed. If there was no greed in the system, we would just each make our own tables and plows, and not care about whether we would have more resources in a different distribution.

Though maybe the problem comes in the definition of "greed"?

Uninformed folks like to point at "competition" being the great leveler, but any macroeconomics student not sleeping though class can tell you that such competition requires a vast number of entrants, not just three or four (or 10 or 20), and not one or two massive sellers and 20,000 tiny ones either.

That same student will also explain things like natural monopolies and the folly of treating them as if they were some kind of free market.

Collusion, oligopoly and predatory practices pretty much sum up the broadband business (and cable TV for that matter).

Imagine if 10 fiber lines came to your house and you could choose between them?

That would be good for the consumer but not very good for the seller.

So we're left with 1, possibly 2 lines from companies that are price gouging and negating their own contracts because they don't want to pony up for the costs to maintain and upgrade their infrastructure ....not very good for the consumer!
