[General] I may be going back to AT&T

Even though I currently have Comcast, in the evenings, my speeds drop. However, I have noticed that DSL is much more consistent.

Am I wrong in assuming that DSL may have a cleaner and more consistent line although their advertised rates are generally lower than cable (in my case, ComCap)?

EDIT: The download speeds seem to be pretty consistent as well. If I am pulling 5 1/2 MB on a 6MB line, my downloads are usually around 716KB and do not drop down to 200-300KB like my 6MB w/PowerBoost ComCap line.

Cable is always better unless you have COmcast which is crap.

At&t is crap too, and if their the only providers in your area....

Now that's a pretty broad statement.

Not really,

They are both crap, Comcast and AT&T at least. It's not that any one is any better than the other, its more like your mileage will vary according to any number of variables.

What people forget is that both provide Internet on a best effort basis to general consumers like you and me. To maximize profits those corporations will do as little as required to both maintain the service and keep it competitive in order to maximize their profits and the value they represent to their shareholders.

Now in AT&T's defense and to their advantage, they do invest much more in the physical layer. Which loosely translated means that even in the worst of weather conditions and its aftermath you can expect phone service and probably Internet service as well.

Unfortunately as we've seen in the last few days/weeks, that doesn't much translate to their consumer internet service being able to move packets around in a decent amount of time or delivering the contracted amount of bandwidth.

Just follow the forums, it's a love / hate relationship...

In the end it's a roll of the dice, and no matter who you go with you may end up eventually switching and even switching back as your patience level and the carriers problems vary...

Good Luck

The one thing you are not considering which will help you to know in advance who is better, your DSL internet provider(in my case at&t/bellsouth)or your High Speed cable internet provider,(charter cable)is to walk around your neighborhood and ask your neighbors who they have, and if they are happy with their service.

In my neighborhood I have recieved 95% positive feedbacks for AT&T/Bellsouth and 95% negative feedbacks for Charter internet. After doing that, it looked to me that I was certainly not the only unhappy Charter internet customer.

Both statements are very general and incorrect in my experience. I had Comcast HSI for years and it was fine. Blazing fast and very reliable. No slow downs that I ever noticed. This was in the Boston area.

Now I have ATT 6Mb Xtreme DSL. I have had at least 2 extended outages (between my house and ATT) in a year with ATT DSL, but they compensated me both times, and in general, it's been reliable. It also costs 2/3 as much ($27.95 as opposed to $42.95 or more).

I have had DSL (Bellsouth) for almost 5 years. Very reliable although not the fastest compared to cable. Unfortunately our cable is Charter who cannot keep the service on a week straight. And at least DSL provides backup dial up service in the event they do go down. Cable says tough luck

Good point. You also get free WiFi access as well to ATT hotspots.
