If you use GSM (umts) then you are using 3G voice.
Wrong. GSM is clearly 2G while UMTS is W-CDMA = 3G

In fact all you have to do is check most WM phones: you can select if you want to use WCDMA/UMTS/3G or stick with GSM by default for voice.
