I think the reason these types of stats are thrown out is because everyone is looking to data to be the next revenue generator. Well alot of people have 3G phones, but using them for voice only. Not knowing or caring that they are 3g I don't know what you mean by "lot of people" but it's unlikely - if you list the phones on att.com or tmo.com most are still 2G only...
