How to properly configure WAP on wireless network?

I have a wireless router here that I use for my home network. My buddy and I have a little debate on how to properly setup the following situation:

I want to take a wireless access point and plug it into a network cable I'll be running across the house which will be connected to my wireless router. I'm doing this to expand my wireless coverage.

What SSID and channel should I put the WAP on? Should it have the same settings (SSID and channel) as the wireless router has?

You know I looked for that in the FAQ, and I completely missed that section. I thought I remembered seeing it once too, and I assumed it was moved or something.

Thanks!
