FDM80 : I called on behalf of my parents to get them the free upgrade from 5/2 to 10/2. You do not have to subscribe to any other services. They will try and offer you other services though. You can just say no thanks.

I will warn you of one thing though, after the change, keep a close eye on your bill. It is very easy for them to take a free upgrade in speed and accidentally charge you as if you purchased a faster tier, or are on the month to month price ($50.99) instead of the yearly contract price ($42.99).

Ragnaloki : I just learned that Verizon is supposedly offering "upgrades" for customers who call and ask for them after checking the wikipedia page for FiOS. I thought maybe someone could help answer a couple of questions so I don't go into the conversation completely unaware about how the upgrade works.

My mom is the one who is the FiOS account holder and pays for the service, but she hates talking to customer service reps.

Can I -- as her son -- call and ask for the upgrade? We have the had the 5/2 plan since August 2006, and as I understand it we would be going to the 10/2 plan if we ask for an upgrade. I understand we would be paying $3 more a month for the 10/2 plan, but will they make us subscribe to any other related/miscellaneous services to get the upgrade? Any "catchs" to all this? We have Verizon as our telephone provider, but we don't have FiOS TV.

We're in Northern Virginia.
Thank you for your time.
