| Need LCD recomendation... Looking to replace a tv in our bedroom - currently it is a CRT and I think 19 inches. I want to replace it with a 19 or 22-25 inch LCD, HDTV for OTA (720p), will be attached to Dish receiver (non-HD), and it needs to have pretty good speakers as we do not have external speakers. We do have a VCR and dvd player as well to hook up.
I have looked at several at Sam's that seem to be ok and I have seen some Samsung LCD's that seem to have great pictures but are on the expensive side.
I plan on this being for a Christmas gift for my wife and I. Not planning to buy in the next couple of weeks but plan on taking some time unless there is a killer deal that crops up....
Any ideas? -- Brian

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... said by Hall :said by CylonRed : HDTV for OTA (720p), will be attached to Dish receiver (non-HD) Make sure it has at least (2) RF inputs. I'm curious as to why? Just make sure it has plenty of external hookups. Component for the DVD player, composite for the VCR, and SVideo for the Dish. Then you'd just need the single RF input for the OTA signals.
That being said it's hard to go wrong with the Samsungs.. they do work pretty well.

| Stay away from glossy LCD screens. Otherwise, you'll be looking at yourself in TV all the time They start offering them not only for laptops, but even for small TV too -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... | |

I am surprised no one had any recommendations though - folks have to be buying these as well as the larger LCD's.

If we watch a movie, the blinds are closed and any lighting will be behind or beside the TV, *never* in "front" of the TV where it can reflect off the screen. I am surprised no one had any recommendations though - folks have to be buying these as well as the larger LCD's. I don't recall what your budget is and mind you, I don't throw money around casually, but on a lower-end -- I do seem to recall it will be a smaller TV -- people don't sweat the details as much.

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... If i had to pick a number for a budget - I would probably say $450 or less but if the TV is really good I might be persuaded to go as high as $500.
I just wish I could trust the screen in the stores - to know that the tv setups are not being played around with to try and push people into a particular set. Probably don't have to worry as much about that for smaller LCD's and places like Sam's.

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... I never said I was going to wait 3 months - only that I did not plan on buying in the next couple of weeks unless a killer deal came up. I will continue to look from now till I decide on one and buy it. Couple be less than a month from now - might be longer. If one is going on sale due to a new model being released and is a good tv - then I would strongly consider the older model. | |

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... I can buy a Christmas gift any time - not necessarily going to be bought in December. As noted in the second sentence - did not plan on buying in the next couple of weeks... With no modifiers after that part of the sentence - I can buy after a couple of weeks easily. | |

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... I will agree on the 5ms response speed helping action motion blur on cable or satellite programming.
But .. I think the 120Hz feature mostly or only has to do with resolving what is called "judder" from movies, which are filmed at 24 frames per second. 24fps doesn't divide into either 30fps or 60fps evenly. But it does into 120fps, so you get an even, more smooth picture.
So unless you are watching a MOVIE source via DVD, Blu-Ray, or HD-DVD, from what I have read 120Hz doesn't do much or anything for normal motion blur.
Per CNet:
"The fact is, we haven't had a motion-blur problem with any of the newer 60Hz LCD TVs we've reviewed in recent times. Don't get me wrong--we did see a lot of what you might call blurring in faster-motion scenes, but it was always inherent in the source, so it looked basically the same on all of the TVs, including the plasmas."

join:2002-10-29 1 edit | It's all marketing to me! I still don't see "judders" on my normal DLP 65inch TV with blu-ray, etc.
Only thing that'll benefit 120hz is the source is really pushing out 120 different frames per second.

| Re: Need LCD recomendation... It is not as fast of a monitor/tv... although it looks pretty good... I have no problems watching the HD on my regular TV (DirecTV HD/Letterbox) with no motion blurs and jidders, but on an LCD I bought and returned WOW... like someone poured water on the screen... so much blur and jitters... I'd suggest buy one @ the local WerstBye and do a dry run, and than when you found one you like, buy it online cheaper... | |

| Sorry if I confused all, but was trying to say to you, you may not need to spend the extra $$'s for a 120Hz set. And that is how we got off track
Someone earlier in the thread suggested to avoid an LCD without 120Hz processing as motion blur would occur in fast moving action sequences. I brought up that unless you see, and some people don't, judder in MOVIES the 120HZ doesn't make a difference over a 60Hz set for just motion blur.
If you have the extra bucks, go for the gold, 1080p, 120hz, etc. but if you are saving $$'s you have to pick and choose the features that will benefit your type of use and viewing, not the ...see my TV's specs bragging rights.... LOL
