But if people want to get off it and move to cable, that's just more bandwidth for me!

| reply to S_engineer yes lot of people.dsl stops 1700 feet from me,and IM about 3 1/2 miles from the co,and cable is 1 1/2 miles from me on the same road.to stop all the stupid comments such as just move or you decided to move there.I moved here in 1988 when there was no internet or cell phones, and this property has been in the family for many years, and was about to be lost when we moved here and took over payments, and even in 2008 we still have no cable, dsl, and no cell service |

Well, then there ya go friend. No amount of posting here will change the fact that the service providers - DSL or cable - do not see you as profitable enough to extend their lines to provide you with something better than what you currently have(Sat, right?).
Sorry for the dilemma, but other than paying for the extension yourself(thousands of dollars I imagine), I doubt that the ISPs will do it.
As I stated last time... I have relatives that can't get anything better than 24kbps dialup. Sat is not an option for them - LOS is blocked and the price is a hell of a deterrent even if it was doable.
So, with them as is with you - at this point in time, the only options are pay for it to be extended or... move. Right? -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

they are going to have to add their whole footprint if they want to stay in business, because they cant compete with cable with speed now can they.plus they promised the fcc that they would have dsl for entire footprint by 2008.well we will see.i have been told by at&t that they will have dsl to me ,but cant tell definite date so you can kept your little piss poor attitude to yourself, and do a little research on stuff before you post useless knowledge |

| reply to DrModem have you thought about the dual-modems? supposedly it takes your two phone lines and automagically combines it so you have about double the speed of one modem.
i don't have any experience with this, but i always wondered what i would do if i was in your situation. |

1 edit | reply to splat1622 Look friend, I am sorry they will not service you where you live. Question for you... do you actually think posting here is going to get AT&T or whomever to connect you any faster or at all?
I'm sorry splat, but it isn't helping anyone to be here condemning AT&T for not extending their lines and adding a RT just for you.
How about you call them and offer to pay for the new RT that they seem to think isn't worth it?
Fine! You live there for whatever reason and have no intention of moving. Cool! Well guess what, ya might be in for a wait - possibly indefinitely to get DSL. This is all I am trying to get across to you.

| reply to morbo Which usually involes finding an ISP that will allow it and paying for two phone lines (3 if you want one to always be available for calls).
At that rate it'd probably be cheaper and in better speeds to jump on the wireless broadband bandwagon. I'd assume any of these places that people can't get squat are at least served by 1xRTT or EDGE which is on par or better than dialup. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. Shotgun modems require two phone lines, and a double-dialup account (if anyone still sells them). If the OP ordered a second phone line, Verizon would install it on a DAML (line splitter), and the effective potential throughput of the line would be halved ... at four times the price!
The best options for this guy are IDSL (doubtful), moving (why not?), EVDO, or as another poster suggested, making friends with someone at the end of the broadband chain and installing a WiFi link. 1700' is very, very achievable. |

I tired of replying to your selective reading IM not the only one that lives on this road, and i can say whatever i want to about at&t dsl and cable is all the way around me,and have been told to wait they will get it to me How about you call them and offer to pay for the new RT that they seem to think isn't worth it? I have called at&t,and they wont even let me talk to anyone that knows what they are talking about to tell me a def. date.I did ask if i could pay for equipment they said that i couldn't do that they didn't let anyone do that.I did talk to charter and they want 10,000 to extend to me they said that they were not adding new customers anywhere they didn't already have lines up Fine! Sorry! where did you get that i had no intention of moving it certainly wasn't from me.I have been trying to move for two years(if you would read ALL of my post you would know that.you cant sell a house that doesn't have internet, cable, and barley cell service, you would not buy a house like that would you. I asked that nobody post stupid quotes like move,or you chose to live where you live so deal with it.I deserve decent internet just like anyone else, and should not be treated like trash just because of where i live.you don't know my situation IM prob. just as urban as you.IM at the bottom end of my county, right at the county line(the ass end)where we get forgot about |

1 edit | reply to splat1622 Not until today have you ever said shit about trying to sell your house. When this house, MY house, was purchased, it had nothing. Not even phone! But, since it was well within the city limits, getting phone(and all other services) was relatively easy. Location Location Location.
As for why your house won't sell, what's the asking price? Is it actually worth what you are asking? Where is it listed? Got Link? Show me!
Look pal, it's not my fault that you are "unaware" of the realities of living out away from city luxuries. Broadband *IS* a luxury BTW. If the house is not within a certain distance... and it is going to be the only residence utilizing the connection, that makes it unprofitable for the service provider. Not my fault! I am just trying to explain to you the options you currently have. Which aint alot!
Further down this very page, you post EXACTLY what I have suggested - YOU pay for the cable to be extended to the house. Deja vu, huh?
Hook me up with the listing for your house... -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |
