Unable to compete?

DSL: $32/mo
Cable: $45/mo

DSL looks competitive to me.

Yep, dropping my $56/mth cable ISP for a $42/mth DSL connection with about the same throughput wasn't too tough of a choice for me.

$32 = 1.5/256
$45 = 6/1

At least in my area.

Price isn't everything.

For me, 3mb/768k DSL for that vs 12mb cable for $10 more a month.

DSL is a dying technology.

Is that with or without a POTS line?

Regardless, you can get 768Kbps/128kbps cable here for $14.99/month and 1.5Mbps/256Kbps for $29.99 ... The $14.99 is only a promo, but it's a 12-month promo that can be renewed. No cable required.

DSL was always the inferior product (distance issues, speed issues, PPPoE requirements) but, at least initially, had an edge because it wasn't a "node shared" medium and wasn't subject the slowdowns of cable.

Since the MSOs have started to perfect their DOCSIS rollouts, the cable product has improved significantly to the point where it is not the big issue Ma Bell would like you to believe.

DSL: $35 for 6/768... but I don't have a POTS line so we'll have to include that - plus a contract.

Cable: $52.95 for 16/2 - no contract.

Hmmm... Bang for buck goes to cable
$3.31 per mb via cable
$5.83 per mb via DSL
I'll stick with cable.

it's not the price that's non-competitive. it's the package
I'm 8 blocks from the CO, lines run straight by my house, I had 3/1 DSL 6 years ago as part of a third party beta test, yet Verizon will only offer me UP TO 768/768, with a POTS line. (the latest offer was the DSL is free for a yearw/POTS) if I call on their other offers 3/768, or 1.5/768 at $39.95, and 29.95 they still only qualify me at UP to 768/768 at those prices w/ POTS. it really is the new dialup.
the worst thing is, the CO was all fibered to prep for FIOS 1.5 year ago, which was delayed to this year, and now appears delayed to next year. If I dump dump my basic POTS line (and I'm close to doing that) they'll really have to make a great promo offer to win back my business, even when FIOS arrives.
Cable on the otherhand has taken me from 1.5/368 to 16++/2+ over four years at the same monthly price (with several generous promos along the way, a nearly perfect reliablity record(other than a massive "storm of the centry" and a traffic accident that took out power feeder and cable backhaul lines, which killed POTS too.)

That's with a POTS line ($18/mo). But I'd have the same POTS line regardless of the internet service, so it doesn't enter into the price comparison.

My $32 DSL is more reliable than the $45 cable service I used to have.

Right... some of us do look for the bottom line in pricing.

1.5Mbps/384kbps = $35 (dry loop)
3.0Mbps/512kbps = $40 (dry loop)
6.0Mbps/768kbps = $45 (dry loop)
10Mbps = $55 (uverse only, lots of hoop jumping required)

Cable:
1.5Mbps = $34.95
6Mbps = $42.95
10Mbps = $54.95

Pretty competitive here.
DSL for stability, Cable for having available higher speed service (eg. no 6Mbps DSL here)

For me, DSL is $65 a month when you count the cost of the required landline. Cable is $29 (no landline).

What's really a sore point for me is that my DSL speed isn't much better than it was 6-7 years ago when I got it. It's just 300kbs up and down. It was about 220kbs when I got it. I just don't see Qwest taking steps to improve their infrastructure. For $29 a month I can get 1.5mbs on cable. ("Up to speed." Not sure what it will actually be. But, it can't be slower than 300kbs.").

I just canceled my Earthlink DSL and Qwest phone line. They should be turned off tomorrow.

You're right. Let me add some detail to my point of view.

My $56/mth cable ISP tier was rated at 8 Mbps down, 512 Kbps up. "Real life" translated that into 6.8 Mbps down, 440 Kbps up.

My $42/mth DSL tier is rated at 6 Mbps down, 512 Kbps up. "Real life" translates that into 6.5 (yes, more than the rated tier ) Mbps down, 430 Kbps up.

So, calculating cost per megabit, my cable ISP cost me $8.24/Mbps (for download) while my DSL costs me $6.46/Mbps (for download). If you want to count upload, the cable ISP cost me $127.27/Mbps while my DSL costs me $97.67/Mbps.

So even though the throughput for DSL is "about" the same as for cable, DSL wins all around for me

Look at my comparison in response to your other post. DSL wins on service and cost in my area.

Well, DSL is not a dying technology for me. My other option would be cable and I hate TW and will go to dialup rather than give them any money.

It was the complete opposite for me since I was on a 15,700 ft. loop.

That's right, you get "free" throttling and caps, plus maybe friendly calls from cable. Sounds like a winner.

Actually, the perk is I get to get hanged up by the reps.
