That's right, you get "free" throttling and caps, plus maybe friendly calls from cable. Sounds like a winner. Vchat20Landing is the REAL challengePremium join:2003-09-16 Columbus, OH | reply to Matt Agreed. Just to add to this, DSL tech makers are still scrambling trying to find the next best technology to cram more and more speed into (often) aging and crumbling twisted pair with little protection against ingress. And it's this same twisted pair that is fighting back and preventing further increases in speeds with DSL in addition to the obvious distance issues already plaguing the technology. Even AT&T has exampled this with Uverse and using VDSL which is the Rolls Royce of DSL tech in terms of speed.
Cable on the other hand has plenty of breathing room and still much more room to grow with the rollouts of Docs3. As it stands, right NOW they are already running circles around DSL and will continue to do so right up to DSL's death knell. Not to mention that, more often than not, cableco's already have fiber trunks as part of their hybrid fiber/coax plants run really damn close to customer premises' and would require little work and capital beyond short extensions of fiber and the ONT's to follow Verizon and go all fiber if they desired to down the road.
But to appease naysayers on both sides here, the one constant thing to keep in mind is that in terms of service quality, it ALWAYS varies from area to area. One person may have great luck with their DSL provider and shitty luck with cable while another may have just the opposite. Try both out, gauge the service quality, then go from there with price. Simple. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. Breathing and heart beat taxes their whole system, all of their brain cells wasted on life support.-two bit brains, and the second bit is wasted on parity! ~head_spaz |

Blast(16/2) can be had without any other service for $66.95 which levels right off at the same bang for buck as the DSL above.
Remember, there is no POTS here, you have to include the reconnect of POTS and/or service to even get DSL.
Bottom line as in lowest price, DSL. Best value is still cable - No distance limitations and no contracts. Plus higher speeds. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

 | reply to amigo_boy geez. How much were you paying for your landline? $30?
With At&T you can get metered service for $5.70 a month, which makes the total cost of 3MB DSL a little over $35.00. |

 | As I explained earlier in the thread, I'd have the same POTS line regardless of what ISP I used. Besides, my POTS line is $18 per month. |

 | No it isn't. The total amount of fee's and unfees is around 4.00.
So, make it $10.00 for the landline.
Happy now? |

Happy now? You cannot get an absolutely basic POTS (metered) line here for less than $16 or so a month unless they've changed it in the past 2-3 years. The metered line is $9.99 and the unfees are at least $5. -- Linux Haters Unite! |

1 edit | reply to asdfghjklzx5 I've got my AT&T bill in front of me, the Federal Subscriber Line Charge is $5.77. The total of fees and taxes is $11.14. If the basic rate was $5 for a POTS line, it'd cost at least $16 by the time AT&T was done adding made up fees and taxes. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |

 | reply to Rob DSL here is $39- 6.0, $29 - 3.0, and $20 for 1.5. For $20, not sure why you wouldn't have at least basic DSL. |
