DSL Is The New Dial-Up- My Experience

I have had comcast 8/1 at $43/month for some time.

A month ago, we moved and there is no Cable Internet available from anyone. We are about 10 miles from town in a very, very rural area.

But I can get DSL @ $40/month at 1.5/512k and have had it for about 2-3 weeks.

My phone and DSL are provided by a local Co-Op serving a small area and small customer base. Fortunately for me, they have expanded and put out a new CO not far from me, otherwise I'd be on dialup.

I did try out dialup and got 49.4k! Dialing into a friends Qwest dialup account.

Comparing the two - I see little difference in downloading websites, VOIP, Video. It is usually the servers that one is connecting to that determine how quickly sites load [with some credit given to processors, ram, hdd speeds, etc that can affect rendering of web pages]. Not to mention the tweaks that can be done to Firefox.

Comcast did have the pipe to download very large files, but I only do that rarely.

I was working for USwest/Qwest in 1999 when they first deployed DSL in Phoenix, then Seattle and was with them until all markets had some sort of DSL.

I did have some hiccups and as I thought, it was the phone lines in the house that was built in the late 1800's. Once I disconnected unused lines and ran a dedicated line for the DSL all was then fine.

Except, the DSL modem was assigning IP addresses on the same subnet as my Wireless AP/Router. Changed the IP addresses of the Wireless Router and have not had a problem since.

So is DSL soon to be dead? Maybe in some areas, but not in mine. The Teleco Co-Op has its own equipment [it does not contract out the service to others]. Plus Comcast has moved into part of its territory, closer to town, so they now have to compete. And in so doing have upgraded service for us in an area where Comcast will not ever serve.?

So that is my experience.
