I'm pretty sure that's NSW 2008. NSW 2009 isn't supposed to be out until later this year (supposedly).

Well, it definitely was a newer version than what I've been using for almost a year now. In fact, the reason why I decided to remove NSW after installing the new version this morning was because the control panel didn't integrate properly with NIS like the previous version. I was stuck with 2 icons in my sys tray and NSW wasn't reading a bunch of stuff properly, like telling me I had no AV or firewall installed...when of course I had both with NIS 2009.

Maybe I'll install my previous version of NSW and see what happens.

BTW: what is a simple way to turn off the NIS 2009 firewall and AV features when doing something like a driver update?

You can just flip the "switches" on the main page to "red" (to the right). You shouldn't need to turn them off to update your drivers though.

Re: Norton 2009 Product Line Now On Sale!

All I have to say is... "WOW!" to what Symantec has done. It's turned a lot of the "Norton-haters" on these forums to... well, lets just say that they hate them a lot less.

Definitely the 2008 was a lot better than the past and 2009 blows 2008 away!

Now, someone point me in the direction of a download of WinAntiVirus. LOL

I was wondering what the difference is between the new Norton Internet Security 2009, and Norton 360 version 2.0? I looked at the webpage, and in a nutshell I wanted to know what the differences are.

Is Internet Security 2009 just faster? Norton 360 cost a little more, but I like the online storage it comes with. Which one should I go with?

The comparison chart on Symantec's site seems fairly straightforward.

Basically 360 is an all-in-one application that combines the features of Internet Security, System Works, Ghost and online backup. It doesn't do everything that those individual products do though, just the basics of what they do.

So if you need the extra features in NIS 2009, which basically appears to be the shorter update and scanning times (less interuptions), then get NIS 2009. If you don't care about that or feel that the extra features in 360 are worth the extra $10, then get 360.

AFAIK, 360 is still the older product design. IMO, no comparison to the new NAV/NIS 2009 products. I run NIS 2009. I would not own 360...

Thank you for the help. I guess I totally missed the comparison chart here. Thanks.

Re: Norton 2009 Product Line Now On Sale!

Well, I have to admit it- so far so good. It's only been one day (trial version), but it seems to work as advertised. Fast install, light resource load, fast scanning, etc. There are a few things, mostly minor, on the negative side:

It flagged two files as malware, and quarantined them, but I think they were false positives:

1. Flagged as bloodhound.exploit.196: ...\temporary internet file\content.ie.5\unempmzmt\info[1].pdf

2. Flagged as Trojan Horse: ...\temporary internet file\content.ie.5\2hqtabmr\x7b[1].xml

As others have mentioned, the help system could be a little better. It's not terrible, but they need a "novice" and "experienced" level. For example, I can't tell if the general firewall settings for my laptop, which is connected by wireless, are protecting my laptop from pure external threats that make it through my router (okay, that's not likely to happen, but...) or threats strictly from my desktop PC only.

I had a tech support issue. It wasn't clear when I started the tech support wizard, but following it WILL get you to free live chat. In my case, there was really no infuriating repeated stupid questions as we have come to expect from offshore tech support. The person was generally pretty competent. My problem was not fully resolved, but after further research, I found that it was really a Windows problem, and I was able to fix it myself (printer sharing problem).

The email spam scanning flagged an Amazon.com message as spam. I added the domain to the whitelist, and also adjusted the spam slider one level to be more forgiving. One thing I miss (was using Trend Micro) is the ability to simply forward the wrongly-flagged spam to the security company. With Trend Micro, you just forwarded it to false@trendmicro.com, and it would be removed from their spam list.

I also wish there was a setting to allow live viewing of firewall activity. I was unsure that it was doing anything, but after using the log viewer, I am content that it is working. Trend Micro would immediately flag any new program it saw going out to the internet, so on the occasions when a program was updated, there was the ritual of launching each updated program that used the net (like Quicken, and even IE), to mark it as OK. Not so with Norton 2009. So far, it has let all my programs access without notifying me. This is good, so long as it stops anything bad from going out. All of my programs are pretty much the standard stuff, so there may be an extensive whitelist that they use, but I just don't know.

If it keeps running smoothly, and I find out about the firewall non-notification, I will make the change from trend Micro to Norton 2009.

I'm glad this thread received a "bump" as I missed it.

And, based on what I've read here, I'll image my DT box and trial 2009.

Hmmm? Decided to trial NIS2009 based on this thread. I must say I'm quite pleased with it. Enough so that I went to Amazon and ordered it. I haven't used a Symantec product since I got this laptop that came bundled with a trial NAV2007 (which I dumped). Before that was in 2002. Since then I've used primarily KAV then AVG.

Yes, since posting last in this thread, I'm back with NIS2009, into a 90 day trial. The NAS access problem hasn't resurfaced and, I too continue to be impressed.

I've a similar past history with Norton, having all but written them off over the years, with occasional peeks.

They've got a winner with v2009 and, I'm now recommending it to some folks.

I've valid licenses to both KIS and KAV and, after the NIS2009 trial, I intend to get a look at GData's AV coupled with Comodo or Online Armor .. or may look at PCTools' FW.

Personally, I'm not impressed enough with NIS2009 to throw KIS2009 under the bus. Overall (detection capability and especially FW strength), I think that, currently, there isn't another suite product that is superior to KIS2009, and I anticipate returning to it's use.

Get over it. It's not like any Norton product you've ever experienced .. seriously.

Speaking to the suite .. it has a "good" FW (better than many designated FW's) and it's detection/protection capabilities place it, solidly, in the upper tier of "top 5" currently available security apps .. period.

What's not to like?

I would not use Norton even if they pay me for using it.

Actually, NAV 2009 is a much different animal than that of NAV earlier in the decade. Smaller footprint, faster scan time, high accuracy, and much less fuss and bother. NAV was the first AV I used way back when, and the current NAV is vastly improved. That's the lead contender so far in my trials of different AV's for my computer.
