That is exactly what it sounds like
Remember, you can only push a finite amount of bandwidth through a coaxial cable. When RCN makes the (in my opinion) mistake of offering 20mbit service it is VERY easy to oversaturate the line.
Now if RCN sold it as 8mbps with 12mbps being 'best effort' they could probably deliver a good service to all their customers a lot better. |

Can barely even hit 75% of advertised speed at 1 PM on a Tuesday... |

Maybe now RCN can fix this, in a timely manner.
Thanks! |

Soooo, RCN... any more insight? Still slow.
Here's a graph from 10 minutes of downloading at what should (and can) saturate the entire connection. Average speed? About 5.5mbit. Ouch.

Help! |

@rcn.com | reply to Pzykotic I've been having these exact problems in Somerville for a few months. Earlier tonight my download speed was 5 Mbps but now it has slowed down to .28 Mbps as you can see in the attachment. |

4 edits | reply to Pzykotic My apologies. Here's the screenshot I promised in the previous post.
I ran the speed test again after that screenshot and the download speed was an even slower 0.24 Mbps (on a 5 Mbps service). I've called RCN three times in the past week about this problem and technicians have asked me to power cycle the modem each time but that had no effect. I don't think the outsourced support staff has any idea why this is happening.
I'll keep an eye on the posts here from now on until there's some resolution.
[Mod note: IP obscurred. Not a good idea to show that on a public board. sash] |

4 edits | Thanks, moderator. I should have read a little more before my first post here on dslreports.com. I'll obscure my IP from now on.
After my third call to RCN I finally got an appointment for a technician to visit next week. I'll post any relevant updates as I get them.
Pzykotic: I'm a little new at this. What software do you run to get that graph? |

| reply to Pzykotic Yeah, there's something fishy in Somerville. I doubt a tech will be able to do anything, and if anything they'll find everything is OK because the appointment is probably at a time when the node isn't saturated.
We really need one of the heavy hitters from RCN that posts here to give us an update, because this is ridiculous.
The graph is from my router, a WRT54GL running DD-WRT (custom firmware) that has bandwidth graphs. I'm sure there's Windows programs that do the same thing, but it'd just be for that one computer instead of the entire network. |

| I posted earlier in this thread that I've been seeing the same problem. Tonight I ran two speedtests between 11 and midnight, and both came in around 0.35 Mbit down. This is on 10 Mbit service and is even slower than usual.
I finally called into tech support, and the tech had me power cycle the modem, run a longer speedtest, etc. He could view my speedtest results and seemed genuinely disturbed about how slow the speeds were. After we checked everything he could from his end, he said he would send my documentation to the network engineers to see if it is a problem on RCN's end. He gave me a case number and asked me to check back tomorrow evening. |

| reply to Pzykotic Hi guys, i too live in Somerville, and for the past two years, my connection as been slowing down to a point where staying online is very difficult, like everyone has been saying, during the day (4am to 6pm) the speed is not only adequate, it is actually above the advertised, reaching 7.3 mbps, but when i need the speed the most (at night when i am actively playing online games) it's just not there, trying to play a next gen game with 0.23mbps it is impossible. I too have called tech support, several times, with no results. I have a tech guy come to the house, exchanged the modem, put a attenuator on the modem cable line, because according to him, the signal was too strong, and it was causing the modem to bog down...hmmm. I starting thinking i may be getting hacked, my router got a virus (if that is even possible), bought new router D-link gamer lounge DGL 4300, QOS is off, and no change. At one time last summer, it got so bad the modem wouldn't even connect to the RCN network, one call a surprised support tech 45 minutes on the phone, another hour wait i got it back online with very very slow speed. So anyway, a year and a half later numerous calls, the problem is not resolved, and it is getting worse, can someone please fix this? I need the speed... I'll try to post pics whenever i get a chance. I apologise for my rambling, but i am becoming very frustrated about this issue |

| reply to Pzykotic Whether it was 8:00 am or 8:00 pm I was never getting my contracted speeds. Retentions department informed me that the Toshiba router was not capable of the Mach 20 service and to replace it with the Scientific Atlanta modem. My speeds have been great, hitting slightly over 20 Mbps down and 1.7 Mbps up. See the RCN speedtests I have posted on DSL reports. But, now like the other RCN customers from Somerville my speeds at night are dropping down to th 5 to 10 Mbps range. As far as the data from the RCN speedtest site is concerned all looks good from signal strength to the noise on the line. This info is unchanged whether it is 5:00 am or 8:00 pm. 1 edit | reply to Pzykotic Can you two post screenshots of the lower part of »ma.speedtest.rcn.net/ to show that your signal/levels are a-ok? Just want to give RCN the info they need so they can look into this asap.
Even though they disappeared from this thread after telling me it was my fault and me disproving them thoroughly :P |

| reply to afty So I called back tonight to check on the status of my problem ticket. The first tech I got was completely clueless. He couldn't even look up my case number properly; he told me it did not exist in their system, and that it had "probably" been closed because they fixed the problem. He then had me jump through hoops for a full hour, running speed test after speed test. He then tried to convince me that 0.17 Mbit is an "acceptable speed." After an hour of getting nowhere with him, I hung up.
I called back and got a different tech. This guy was able to look up my case number from last week, which had been sent to the network engineers for troubleshooting. He told me that the line engineer said it was signal loss and wanted to have a tech come out to check the modem and the wiring. With the reports here and the fact that my speeds are fine during the day, plus the fact that my modem signal levels are fine, I don't think that would help anything, and I told him as much.
This is extremely frustrating. There are 5 of us in this thread, all in the same town complaining about the same problem and getting similar results from the speed test. Clearly there is a network problem in Somerville. Can someone from RCN please help? |
