All,

I'm looking into this and will post a reply shortly, I don't believe this is any sort of issue at the node or at your house, it looks to be a issue of congestion and available bandwidth. Let me do some digging and I'll will post a reply shortly.

Jason
Hi Jason,

It's been a week since you said you would reply shortly. Any update? Speeds are still atrocious, with more people attesting to that.

Agreed. I'd like a reply and news about whether some type of credit will be issued for all the bandwidth I've paid for but never received.

Any word when this is going to be fixed?
Come on now, it can't be that hard, can it?

Now it's been 2 weeks since you promised to "reply shortly"... what's the deal? Have you abandoned us?

My fear is that the connectivity issue and the Somerville HDTV issue (see Boston HD thread and other digital conversion threads ) are the same, and it's a problem with old infrastructure. That would mean the silence on the issue is because the upgrade won't happen until February and they know people don't want to wait 5-6 months and jump ship in the meantime.

No change in my download speeds after the technician visit two weeks ago. Last night the download speed test ran at 0.24Mbps.

It feels like I'm being swindled and there's nothing I can do about it.

I wonder if it would help if we got some local media and/or blogs involved. A couple weeks ago the Davis Square Livejournal group (»community.livejournal.com/davis_square) linked to this thread, and it was picked up by Universal Hub (»www.universalhub.com/). There was a good bit of interest, but at the time people were satisfied with rcnman's reply.

A little media pressure might go some way in getting RCN to address this problem, or at least tell us what is going on.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the delay as I had to gather some data from multiple points and CRUSH was eating up all available cycles. As you know I don't tend to beat around the bush so in a nutshell : Yes there are some capacity problems during peak times that is causing the slowness you are seeing. Some downstreams are worse then others but without a doubt the capacity is the issue here.

The Good News : We are already in the process of a fairly large upgrade to this area that I'm awaiting to get the final timetable on. Once completed we will significantly increase the number of downstreams thus increasing overall capacity. Once I get some hard dates I will post them here.

This will not compensate for a slow network but on the main forum page under Tech & Talk, OS and Software see "broadband tweaks". DRTCP is a great tool for helping to increase download speeds. The people there who answer our questions are very good at helping. Again this will not help with the evening slow down, but it can "tweak" your settings and in some cases see a very good increase in download speeds.

I have seen a slight improvement, not a significant one, but i can (at times) open web pages and have them open instantly instead of as if i were on dial-up.
Online gaming is still horrible, the latency is killing me literally.

Glad we finally have an update... too bad it's mostly confirming what we already know and not offering any solution except to "wait it out" while infrastructure is upgraded.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful; I'm glad RCN monitors this forum like Comcast monitors Twitter, I just wish the solution was more immediate and I hope we have this timetable of upgrades ASAP.

In the meantime, I am not getting the 20mbit down, 2mbit up service I pay a lot for. What can be done about that? A rebate on my internet bill until it's fixed? I don't dare call customer service asking for that, I'm sure they wouldn't be able/willing to help me and others here.

Re: [Connectivity] Horrible slowness at night -Somerville, MA

Based on the timetables I've seen we will be increasing capacity starting next week in Somerville. The new CMTS gear has arrived and there will be multiple MTC's scheduled of the course of the next week to get that equipment installed and increase the capacity to that region.
