I was reading something once (can't recall where) where a subscriber had problems only at a certain time. Somehow, the machine generated noise that found its way into the cable system.

But this weekend I suddenly seem to be back to the same old tune of being disconnected every three or four minutes or so. It is beyond frustrating at this point, and some part of me is wondering if I should think about switching to Comcast, despite all of the bad rep they have (although it sounds as though someone else in this thread had the exact same problem with them). In the meantime though, here are my speeds and mac address. The ridiculously low upload speed concerns me as well... many times while playing an online game I've noticed that I can "receive" information just fine, but my input doesn't seem to be going through properly.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

jmluongo : And that's my problem. Nobody is finding any issues with my connection. Taking a speedtest at any given time will return normal results, except for the very brief periods when I am disconnected. And by brief, I mean no longer than 30 seconds. This was happening to me at random intervals last night. Sometimes it would happen every few minutes, sometimes a larger gap. Sometimes my modem's 3 green lights would go off during a disconnect, sometimes they wouldn't.

How is it possible to prove this to you guys? Again, I'm not very tech savvy and I may not be explaining myself too well. I can assure you it's not my computer because I have three here that are all unable to connect at the same time. Faulty modem? Bad wires/splitters? I do live in an old house and the wiring is a bit messed up. Though the people upstairs have Comcast and haven't had any complaints, but they don't really require a constant stable internet connection like I do. I'm out of options.

He couldn't even look up my case number properly; he told me it did not exist in their system, and that it had "probably" been closed because they fixed the problem. He then had me jump through hoops for a full hour, running speed test after speed test. He then tried to convince me that 0.17 Mbit is an "acceptable speed." After an hour of getting nowhere with him, I hung up.

I called back and got a different tech. This guy was able to look up my case number from last week, which had been sent to the network engineers for troubleshooting. He told me that the line engineer said it was signal loss and wanted to have a tech come out to check the modem and the wiring. With the reports here and the fact that my speeds are fine during the day, plus the fact that my modem signal levels are fine, I don't think that would help anything, and I told him as much.

This is extremely frustrating. There are 5 of us in this thread, all in the same town complaining about the same problem and getting similar results from the speed test. Clearly there is a network problem in Somerville.
Laggingamer : Hi guys, i too live in Somerville, and for the past two years, my connection as been slowing down to a point where staying online is very difficult, like everyone has been saying, during the day (4am to 6pm) the speed is not only adequate, it is actually above the advertised, reaching 7.3 mbps, but when i need the speed the most (at night when i am actively playing online games) it's just not there, trying to play a next gen game with 0.23mbps it is impossible.
I too have called tech support, several times, with no results. I have a tech guy come to the house, exchanged the modem, put a attenuator on the modem cable line, because according to him, the signal was too strong, and it was causing the modem to bog down...hmmm. I starting thinking i may be getting hacked, my router got a virus (if that is even possible), bought new router D-link gamer lounge DGL 4300, QOS is off, and no change.At one time last summer, it got so bad the modem wouldn't even connect to the RCN network, one call a surprised support tech 45 minutes on the phone, another hour wait i got it back online with very very slow speed.
So anyway, a year and a half later numerous calls, the problem is not resolved, and it is getting worse, can someone please fix this?
I need the speed...
I'll try to post pics whenever i get a chance.
I apologise for my rambling, but i am becoming very frustrated about this issue

negativeduck : Pzykotic,

Hey, so stupid question when you ran your speed tests did you turn off whatever you have doing uploads? We've got your modem running a solid 2mbps upstream almost all last week and only stopping in the wee hours of the morning.

In 7 days you uploaded alot of data So I just want to make sure when you are doing your tests that you have whatever not running. When I quickly matched up time-stamps it looked like they overlapped atleast your tests to RCN's speedtest system. Likewise if you don't have anything running perhaps now would be a good time to change your wireless key if you have one.

Now, so you don't think I'm putting everything on you;
While Somerville as a hole including your specific downstream is slated for upgrade. However, even then it's not nearly saturated enough to cause the results that you are reporting. Is there any chance I can get you to run tests against our servers at a few random intervals?
--
Bryan Laird
Director Product and Technology

boble88 : When you run your speed tests is there an anti-virus, malware, trojan, firewall, or any other such program running in the background? Do you have a wireless router as well? I ask this because using these on my home PC has taxed my down load speeds anywhere from 2 to 10Mbps. They also have a smaller affect on my upload speeds as well. Taking my Dlink DIR-655 off line has also raised my download speeds. Which is a new problem for me, which I am trying to solve in the Dlink forum.

[Connectivity] Horrible slowness at night -Somerville, MA

Pzykotic : I was very excited to move from Medford MA to Somerville MA, because it meant I could finally ditch Comcast and get back to RCN who I had in Natick and was incredibly satisfied with.

Alas, I only get the 20mbit down/2mbit up I pay for in the afternoons, when I am usually at work. Once I get home around 8 PM, all the way until I go to sleep (even past 1 or 2 AM), I can't get over 6mbit down, and 1mbit up.

Here's a result not 10 minutes ago from speedtest.net which has shown me 20mbit in the past:

And here's one from about 8 PM when it was at its worst. My levels are fantastic and I am confident in my network (yes, I have tried directly connecting and get the same results).

Here's the levels from RCN's speedtest site (and my MAC so you can help me, RCN!):

The conclusion is probably, unfortunately, that my node is saturated. However, this is no excuse. I pay for 20mbit downstream and 2mbit upstream, and I can hardly ever reach that.

What can RCN do to rectify this situation? What's the best way for me to go about getting it fixed?

I disliked Comcast for many reasons, but I got a consistent 16mbit down/1mbit up in my previous residence (the extreme speed tier).

Help me love you again, RCN!
