Re: [ PHONE] A few Cox phone questions

The eMTA is always an internally installed device. To over-simplify, it's a cable modem with ports for two telephone lines and a battery backup (which only powers telphony service in case anybody is wondering).

Unfortunately for me my cable modem is one one side of the living room and my telephone jack is on the other side of the room So if they replace my modem with one that adds a phone port then they will not be able to plug it in to my phone jack.

Unless it is possible to just move my phone over to that side of the room and plug my phone directly in to the modem. If that is possible then that would probably be the easiest way. I don't mind having the phone over there.

Yes, you can just plug a phone directly into the eMTA's telphone port although the remaining phone jacks in the home would not be serviced at that point.

Is it easier to move your cable outlet than your phone wiring?

How far apart are they? Can't you just get a long phone depending on the length.

Well the house was pre-wired for cable and telephone. in that part of the house the telephone jack is in the kitchen and the cable jack is in the living room. The kitchen and living room are right next to each (the kitchen opens into the living room) but they are very far apart. In order to run a wire from one to the other I would have to run across a door.

Imagine a large square. Half kitchen and half living room with a free floating wall in the middle. Come to think of it its kind of like a big square O with the middle wall being the hole in the center. The center wall is free floating serves to separate the rooms. So you can walk around the wall on either side to go from one to the other.

But if I can just plug the phone in to the modem then that's fine because I only have one phone in my house. It's one of those systems with multiple handsets that all run off of the one base unit. So even though I have a phone in every room of my house I only use 1 jack. Right now that jack is the kitchen jack. But if I get a new modem that has a jack I can just plug the phone in the living room and it will be the same difference. All wireless handsets anyways.

But if I plug the phone jack in the modem in to a phone jack in any wall outlet, would that then "back feed" the entire phone system so that all the others jacks are hot?

Oddly enough I just got a $100 rebate offer from Cox to try the phone service How fortuitous I am going to call Monday and give it a try. Wish me luck...

OK, I took the plunge also
I got the same deal as Bill; free install, first month free, $30 a month with unlimited everything and all features, and $100 cash back. I couldn't beat the deal and they twisted my arm. How could I pass that up?

They are coming Oct 2nd to install. We'll see.....

If my experience so far holds true for you, I doubt you'll be disappointed. Question, are you porting a number over from Embarq?

Yes, I am keeping my same old phone number. Why? I hope I'm not going to run into any problems?

Did they cancel your Embarq service for you, or did you have to call Embarq yourself?

Just curious, I never got an Embarq line to begin with so I was a new service install where they got to assign me a number from the start. I would wager good money that most of their installs are ports over from Embarq though, so I'm sure its routine as can be.

Never call the "loosing" phone company during a "porting" move, it can only gum-up the works.

Let the number-portability process work; there're actually quite a few moving parts behind the scenes which have to mesh perfectly ...

... if the process "hangs" call the new/gaining company to have them sort it out.

That said, do keep track of the day your number actually moves; you'll want to compare that to the end-date listed on your final Embarq bill.

Should be here to install at 10:00am. I can't wait

Well it's done. 15 minutes and away I go. SO far so good. Just replaced the modem, plugged in my phone and its off to the races.

He asked if I wanted to wire the entire house but if he did that he would have had to drill and wire and I didn't want that.

He was a pretty good guy and was willing to do what ever it took but I talked him out of it. I think this way is best.

Now its off to making all those long distance phone calls
