Newegg has 231 of them for sale. Hell, 29 of them are Toshibas. So how can anyone look at all of them and list the top three?

Your best bet might be to go to »www.toshibadirect.com and select the characteristics you want. Then look for the best deals for that model(s). Toshiba also has detailed spec sheets for each model. That might provide better info than the mass retailers have.

FWIW, I'm typing this on a 3 year old Toshiba Satellite and I'm very, very happy with it.

PeteC2 : In terms of a Toshiba, in the $600 - $800 range, I would go with a 15.4" screen (will give you the best choice in your price range), an AMD Turion X2 CPU (again, in your stated range a good choice), with the type of games you are talking about, integrated graphics will do fine, and be better in terms of low heat/good battery life. A 160gb, 5400rpm hard drive should be the minimum, if you can get bigger, great, but 160gb isn't bad, and again the "nrom" in your price range...hard drive size will be one of the deciding differences in whether you spend closer to $600 or $800.

The actual individual models are hard to nail down, because just like HP, Toshiba has a lot of similar models with very minor differences. Toshiba sells very similar, but slightly different models based on who you buy from. Circuit City, Best buy etc., have "exclusive" Toshibas that are basically the same lappy, sold as a specific model, by these stores.

IMHO, if you simply prefer Toshibas, no problem going with them. Honestly, you are talking about a decent, but definitely "budget" notebook in the $600 - $800 range, and all of them perform more similarly than not...this is a case where personal preferrence, "look and feel" are OK to base you decision on. Regardless of brand or model, within your budget, they are all decent enough machines, but I have not seen any that are intrinsically "better".

What I really recommend Deft? Write down the features that are important to you, in descending order, then no matter whether you buy on line, or in a "Brick & Mortar" store, initially go to a few stores with a good selection, and get a hands on feel for what you are looking for, and decide at that point.

As you get closer to the $800 range, you might want to consider a couple of the newer options available. for example, on some of the newer HP DV series notebooks, some come with hard drive "anti-shock" type protection, that certainly would be a nice benefit to have.

DVD writers are becoming pretty ubiquitous, not much advantage from one to the other. Lightscribe or Labelflash, which allow burning labels on the cd/dvd are ok features, but most folks really don't end up using it so much. Of course, Blu-Ray is nice, but a pretty high-priced option for a budget lappy.

IMHO, customer service, or tech support is pretty much hit or miss on almost all major brands...I have not seen anyone's service reputation to be much better or worse than each other.
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?

Stiofan : I owned two Toshibas, and frankly they were both crap. I had motherboard problems with both. I now have a Compaq, it's 3 years old and never had a problem. Still going strong, I game on it a lot plus use it for work and travel, so it gets used daily. YMMV

PeteC2 : Deft, I'm just the opposite...not really a Toshiba fan. We had 'em in work for years and they never held up as well as the HP/Compaqs, but...sometimes it is all a matter of pure "luck" with these notebooks, a particular model may have a glitch, or be rock-solid, so I really see no reason why you shouldn't stick with a Toshiba if you have had good luck with them in the past, or just plain like the design/configuration!

$600 - $800 will do you fine unless you want a "gaming" notebook...just can't get much of a GPU in that price range, you know?

Although I am by no means a Best Buy "fan", they do tend to have very decent deals on Toshibas...must do a lot of business with them...

Which one to get? Dunno, that all is a matter of personal usage. The best deals are almost always on 15.4" screen models, as they are the most "common" size/configuration, but a 14.1" lappy is lighter and easier to schlepp around!

You are right, they all have built in wireless, and frankly, it makes zero difference if it is b/g or b/g/n compatible, they all pretty much do what you need...

Intel or AMD? In a perfect world, Intel 'fer sure, but you can save a few bucks with AMD Turion and not really notice the difference!

Anyway, just a few thoughts on the subject. I do not know Toshiba's recent models "blow-by-blow" but as long as you stick to a few basics, such as NO CPU that says "Celeron or Sempron"...just no excusse to get anything less than a dual core CPU nowdays. Stuff like Blu-Ray, blue-tooth, etc., is all a matter of "need", if you don't need 'em, why pay for them?...but if you do, just be willing to up the ante.
--
...something is happening here but you don't know what it is...do you, Mr. Jones?
