I could be wrong, but I think the law is against defacing the currency. There must be a way to mount a coin on a chain in some kind of holder without defacing the coin.

It is not illegal to buy or sell coin jewelry. ShopNBC and the other shopping networks do it all the time. Proof is below. They are selling a brand new US coins as jewelry.

I simply want to buy gold coins for children from the year they were born, mount them in a bezel and get a gold chains to hang them on.
