daveinpoway : You could always try just selecting the option to use DHCP in the router (instead of the option you used with DSL); that may be sufficient. A full reset to factory defaults would be best, however, since you would be starting off with a "clean slate".

Neilkn : Thanks for the response Dave. I guess that is reasonable. I hate to reset and have to set up the wireless security again, get the laptop and Wii talking to the router again. But I guess that will be necessary, and won't really be an option I can bypass if this AT&T DSL service continues to be so lousy.

daveinpoway : In most cases, the router would work out-of-the-box. Since yours has been used on DSL, reset it to factory defaults (see the manual for instructions on how to do this).

Then, follow this sequence:

1) Turn off the PC(s).

2) Remove AC power from the cable modem and router for at least 5 minutes.

3) Hook up the Ethernet cables.

4) Apply power to the modem and let it sync up.

5) Apply power to the router and let it initialize.

6) Turn on the PC(s).

[TW] Earthlink/TW Install

Neilkn : I got fed up with lousy line test results from AT&T DSL, so I was prepared to switch to cable. I contacted Earthlink, who I had many years ago when they were a small local ISP in southern California. Time Warner came for the install ... a contractor in his own pickup truck, no signs, but wearing a Cables Install (or something similar) shirt. He ran a new cable to my computer, but had no idea about setting up a router to connect to the TW network, and speed tests from the computer connection gave me all of 4.2Mbps for the supposed 7.0Mbps connection Earthlink offered. I told him just cancel the order as I was not happy with the speed, nor the no info on setting up the router properly.

My question ... should I ever decide to give them another try ... my D-Link DI-524 router has been working flawlessly with AT&T DSL for a couple of years now, and continues to do so. What settings have to be changed for it to recognize the TW cable network? Do I have to know the IP addresses of the gateway, or any other items?
