 New install, wireless problems

Into the 2nd week of a new install and most things are working okay. Like most of the complaints, I think this concerns the Actiontec but I'm not sure. I don't do any "torrent" type stuff so I have not had the NAT problem.

The problem I'm having is that I have 2 laptops an HP on Vista and a Toshiba A45-S250 on XP. It's using a Belkin 7010 wireless adapter. The Toshiba is the one with the strange problems.

If I run the speed test I can get reasonable speeds. However, if I try to play and AVI video from another computer that is wired to the router I get stopping/stuttering video. If I'm within 10' of the router the AVI works. The farther the distance the worse it is. Sounds like a signal problem but it says the signal is fine. I don't know what the return signal to the router looks like.

When all of this was on a Linksys and cable I never saw the problem.

Anybody have any thoughts on this? I there something I should be tweaking in the router? Thanks.

Ron

•Have you tried the VZ wireless connection wizard here:
»verizon.com/connectionwizard

•Switch channels
•Eliminate interference from cordless phones, microwaves, etc.
•Use a better antenna
•Use a router with a better wireless section,

I should have put that information.

Yes, tried the wizard, optimizer, different security modes; heven't tried the antenna or the Linksys. I was trying to avoid that but I guess not I was hoping there was a magic setting somewhere that I missed

If you can stream video from the web than i don't think it is the router.

On the web it usually buffers ahead, then plays from the buffer.

On the AVI it doesn't. It works if I get close to the
router.

EDIT: more info

took the tower with the AVI --> Linksys WRT160 ---> wireless ---> laptop, no problems.

Strange thing is, if you were to believe the bars on the networks available the Actiontec has a better signal. I think perhaps the receiving end is lacking.

Configured the Linksys as an AP and plugged it in to the Actiontec and it works fine. Go figure!

Common solution. The Actiontec is not known for a strong wireless section.

Do you have the Rev D. (tapered VZ branded)?

Yes, Rev D. It has the firmware you mentioned as the latest in one of your post

The reason I asked is that the Rev. D is supposed to have a newer (better) wireless card in it than the earlier Rev. A units, but I still hear a lot of complaints on here even with the newer version.

The Belkin on the Toshiba could be part of the problem. The HP works much better. It does seem to be sending better than it's receiving. At least, that's my perception

what type of video/what size of video are you trying to stream? With wireless, you have nowhere near the bandwidth of the wired connection to get the video streamed, and if you are doing HD... just forget about it.

No, nothing high tech, just a simple AVI file from a digital camera.

It worked with the Linksys before the Actiontec and now works with the Linksys providing wireless instead of the Actiontec.
