[Vista] x64 4 GB installed. 3.05GB available.

Click for full size
Hey guys,

I just bought a 2x2GB DDR2 kit today and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my situation. I currently run Vista x64 and have 4GB of memory installed. When I check System Information it tells me that I have 3.05GB available. I was wondering if I missed something. I'm aware that Windows' 32bit OS's can't see more then 3GB and 64bit can see 3+. Is what I have normal? In the BIOS it said I 3328MB of "usable" memory of the 4096 MB that is installed.

I use an Asus M2R32-MVP. The rest of my system specs are in the attached pic.

Thanks,
Tyler

Microsoft Help

Take a look at the following at the following MS KB article and see if anything applies:

»support.microsoft.com/?id=929605

The information under the "Workaround" lists all the requirements that must be met for the full 4 GB to be used.

One thing, make sure the memory remapping feature is "enabled' in the BIOS.

Ok, so I read the page you gave me and I have memory remapping enabled. In the BIOS it says I have 3328MB "usable." I took a look at what Everest was showing and it shows that all 4GB are available. With 961 MB being used I still have 3132MB free. Which equals 4GB. Why does it say in the BIOS i have 3.3 "usable" and then Everest tells me I'm able to use all 4094MB? I'm confused. Should I go with what Everest is telling me? I think I am using all 4GB.

What kind of video is the PC using, on the MB or expansion card? If it is on the MB some system RAM is used for video memory, which is controlled in BIOS. Also getting into numbers that big there is a difference betwenn 1000 and 1024.

Look in the bios for memory remapping and make sure it is enabled. I had to do that with my older msi board even with x64 windows.

Don't worry, your computer is using all 4GB of memory. I have the same motherboard.

What you're seeing is how much your computer isn't using for programs plus Windows resources; available free memory. I guess it ignores superfetch when displaying that value.

Mine showed 2.79GB, I rechecked system information and it now shows 2.82GB.

You can confirm this with Task Manager; Physical Memory #%, which mine shows 29-30%.

I second this. I saw the same thing and it was memory remapping. Made the change in the BIOS and all was 'fixed'.

Where in the BIOS do you see 3.3GB usable?
I couldn't locate it.

What BIOS version are you using?

To access this memory, in your BIOS I believe it's called "Memory Hole Remapping". According to some posters in other forums, starting with BIOS v1009 the setting should be under memory configuration.

The default is Disabled so try switching it to Enabled.

Sorry I misread your post and missed your question.

While within my BIOS settings I would see the 2GB DIMMs installed, during POST, when the machine first boots, I would see what processor I had, what speed it was running and the POST reported something like 3.3GB of RAM even though I had 4 installed. I run an Intel chipset (Asrock X48) but my symptoms were identical to yours.

After some reading I learned about this memory remap setting in some BIOSes and looked in mine. I found it and changed it from the default DISABLE to ENABLE. After saving the BIOS setting and restarting, when the machine posted again, the 3.3GB changed to 4GB. And when I finally got back into Vista x64 I had all 4GB of memory usable by the system.

Everest can report used memory regardless of what that address space is being used for. It may not be YOU using that 900MB, but the system using that address space for hardware, video RAM if you use onboard video etc.

I'm using 804 and it's enabled by default.

That's an old BIOS revision from Jan of 2007. I would update to the latest one. 1009 people say introduced a lot of new BIOS settings and they're currently on 1105 from late July 2008.

1009 is buggy.

HT Link is fixed at 5x and the power leds won't work.

804 works fine for me. The latest one doesn't bring anything new other than cpu support.

Try 1105 which is the latest.

What does 1105 fix that isn't broken?

Running vista 64 with 4GB or less is a waste, because everything will use MORE memory than when running in 32 bit vista. Unless you are running applications written to run as 64bit apps ONLY which otherwise would not run in vista 32, you are actually decreasing your performance by running only 4GB of memory in vista 64.

Tom's Hardware recently had an article about Vista 64 bit & memory use.

Maybe this memory mapping problem you're having. Unfortunately the update pages at Asus are short on details. Most just say CPU support updates while forum posts confirm that there are features being added.
