Comcast throttling Netflix's Instant Watch? Answer: No

Click for full size
I have been having a problem for the past few weeks. I try to watch a movie on netflix, and it says its going to take 4 hours to buffer. When I run a speed test at speedtest.net, it shows that I am getting 30mbps. I am paying for 6mbps, so I know that the other 24mbps is powerboost...

Is anyone else having problems streaming Netflix movies and tv shows on Comcast??

Here is a link for more information on the problems:
»community.netflix.com/forum/topi···c%3A7612

As you can tell, my speedtest is still extremely fast:

Now you can see that I am only downloading the movie at a maximum of 140kbps, normally this is 800+ kbps... You can also see how the powerboost shoots up for the first few seconds then dies back down to around 140kbps. Comcast is throttling the connection because I never go this slow downloading, even when I download torrents its faster than this...

Re: Comcast throttling Netflix instant movies?

Well, still unable to watch any tv shows or movies now... Comcast has to be throttling... this is worse than the P2P throttling problem...

None of that is going to help if Comcast is causing the problems. Let me ask, did you recently get that firmware update like the rest of us? It started when my modem upgraded...

I am also wondering if anyone else is having this problem, no one is able to fix it since its on Comcast's end, so I am getting a consensus...

My Linksys modem received a firmware upgrade, yes.

Edit: OK, I just tried a Netflix instant play and it started instantly.

Ok try something, try to watch this movie:

I am buffering right now, says its going to take 2 hours till it starts, also, I am using a Motorolla 5100 modem.

PS - I am only having problems on netflix, no other site is slow

War Games tested connection briefly and then started with no issues.

I don't doubt you are having a problem with your connection, but I believe your guess as to the cause is most likely wrong.

Well, nothing else is slow. Youtube, gametrailers (HD), Hulu (HD) are super fast. Its nothing to do with my connection if that is the only site thats slow... I also provided a link to where other people are having the same slow downs when trying to watch movies...

I don't know, I just know thats its not on my end because the link shows multiple people are having the problem...

There are people here who can help you, but only if you answer the questions so they have something to go on.

The only thing I can post is ping info and a traceroute, which shows my ping is under 68ms... The signal to my modem is great, so I don't know what else to post that people can help with since this is the only site I am having problems with...

Have you called the Netflix help desk? I had a problem getting Instant Watch one time. I called the help desk. They had me reboot my computer and I felt really "S L O W" when that resolved the issue.

I had tried deleting all temp files, clearing cookies, restarting browser, etc., to no avail before calling.

I have run it on multiple computers, I run CCleaner (erases all temp, cache, etc)

I know what I am doing I have tested it on multiple computers and all of them are loading the content slow... Only happens on netflix, its working great with gametrailers.com's HD videos

I sortothought I knew what I was doing, too. Something about using their software and a need to reboot once in awhile. I didn't think of it because I never need to reboot to clear an issue with any other software I run.

Still, I am gathering you don't want suggestions, so I'll just mind my own business now. Best wishes for resolving your problem.

I know your trying to help, but I have done everything I can think of. Your just telling me that netflix would want me to restart my computer, which I have already done. I have restarted the router, modem. I have gotten the ping/latency, changed my DNS.

I have done everything I can think of, but nothing has worked. I know a lot of people on this forum are "n00bs" but I am not one of them :P

I don't use Netflix Instant Watcher, but I do use a Roku with Netflix and it usually starts playing instantly and with the highest quality.

So how about posting a traceroute to the server that it connects to?

If you're "not a n00b", why not download and install wireshark and pcap and do a packet capture while trying to view the movie and post it here and/or review it for indications of packet loss/etc?

Update:

Just contacted netflix, we went over multiple steps. He was unable to help with my situation. He said that the netflix servers were up and they had no problems on their end, they told me to contact Comcast if I was having problems... And you all know, Comcast won't even know what I am talking about...
