Availability

Availability is the big problem. People are realizing the advantage of broadband, and they love it. But, when they call for DSL, they're told they're too far from the central office or the service is so unreliable due to their distance, they switch.

Another problem is midgrade cable packages, like my 5mbps package, are able to compete with the highest DSL package. For instance if someone around here were to get AT&T's elite package, after overhead on a speedtest they'll see 4500kbps-5000kbps, If you're on the cable package I'm on you get the same if not a little better. Cable bundles are actually pretty tasty to people, and in most cases they match if not beat a few $'s a month than going with DSL and some satellite service once the promotion package is up. Let alone the savings after the first year.

One more thing to add: Most people who are in within distance for DSL have migrated from dial-up. But that has caught on and they now have whoever they're going to grasp from that, now what? Only reason I switched to cable: I'm too far from the central office to get as fast as I am with cable.

I have been on dial up for 10 years and finally now DSL has been made availible in my area. I can get up to 5mb but chose to go with 3mb down and 640k up. This is like a godsend to me. I am going crazy waiting for my activation date which is in 2 days. I really feel for you that are stuck with dial up. At my moms house they have cable which is supposed to be 10mb but on some nights it is down to 3mb or 4mb. So in my opinion I would not be as happy if they brought out cable to my house instead of DSL.
