Doctor Olds : OK. It sounds like you have "line sharing" DSL with Earthlink as your ISP and you have regular voice Telephone Service (POTS) through Verizon? Correct?

You would call Verizon about any noises on phone line as they can interfere with the DSL signal since it is sharing the line. You do not need to mention that the noise is affecting your DSL, just tell them the truth about how it started on its own and whether it affects your ability to hear others or for them to hear you.
--
What’s the point of owning a supercar if you can’t scare yourself stupid from time to time?

anon : I have the 2-Wire 1000C in combination with a Linksys 5-port hub. The hardware has been trouble free and robust since purchased back in 2001.

Observed problems as of late:
Frequently dropped DSL connection followed up by an automatic re-connect by the 2-Wire. Online web surfing performance has been spotty lately.

The phone (land line) does work (dial tone present) but there is an overpowering background noise. A kind of mid-range frequency humming. Like having just opened the door into a busy factory.

Z-filters are in use at every phone. At one point I disconnected the dsl modem from the phone jack and shut down all computers. Yet the noise persists at the telephone with or without z-filters.

Any thoughts?

-Steve
