Last night the Kings game was listed on 1474 in the guide for the Game HD channel. I think it came on at 9pm eastern.

So, on night's there "is" an HD game - they are in the guide.

That said, the HD is absolutely fantastic as long as the source is good. I've seen some pretty washed out HD but that's often because of the source. You'll see the same complaints about the same networks over and over...Sun Sports Lightning telecasts are usually pretty bad.

It may have been a preview for someone, but not Verizon. I think it was a mistake. Why have a free preview and not advertise it. Even a crawl on channel 49 would have made sense.

Check the PQ using your DCT-700 digital adapter's composite output. I did a compare of the Flyers / Islanders on Comcast Sportsnet (76) vs. Rangers / Thrashers (1477). Looks just fine. Comcast Sportsnet has the definite edge, but this is a local feed and I expect it to be better.

I'm nearly convinced that it's the IMG 1.6 bug (I'm calling it a bug because it's OK on other STBs).

How to compare:
This is a check for bandwidth, which means that the light to dark transitions should be razor sharp with no fuzzy edges. The text in the graphics bar (logo, score, time, etc.) should be crisp-n-clean. Any smearing or fuzziness is bad.

Those graphics don't move and are easy to see when you flip back and forth between stations. PQ is as good as any other SD channel. I do find it depends on the feed source too, the local fox sports in southern california has horrible PQ for kings games, I'm sure that would be a factor in determining PQ for center ice.

I have my box set to stretch SD content, so I do see some bluring/fuzziness, but setting it to 480p without stretching the image from my TV looks as crisp as SD can be IMO.

No, There is confirmation from the NHL that CI will be carried by Verizon this year.

When I spoke to a Vz rep yesterday she seemed surprised that the channels were listed already.

Someone probably jumped the gun.

The way Verizon has to roll out changes and additions to their programming (having to make the changes at each VHO) almost guarantees dates being pushed back. I don't know if this is useful info to you or not, but when I had NHL Center Ice through DirecTV I still could not watch my local games. Center Ice blocked out all of the local Flyers broadcasts. So I was SOL, because I couldn't get Comcast Sportsnet or Versus on DirecTV and those were the channels that usually carried the games. Only rarely got to see a game if it was on NBC or a local UHF station. If you're as hockey mad as I am and into HD there's no way you can beat DirecTV. The MPEG4 HD picture quality for hockey is simply stunning. Center Ice gives you all the HD broadcasts (home and away broadcasts), not just one or two that the cable companies provide.

No, the people who own InDemand will NEVER make a deal with Verizon for Center Ice. (unless Verizon buys a piece of InDemand which is highly unlikely) If Verizon gets an NHL package of some sort, it'll be called something else. That's also true of the NBA and MLB.

Verizon's going to have to do a deal with the leagues directly.

Here's an added problem with all that: If Verizon could buy the InDemand packages, it would be eliminate a lot of overhead for Verizon. Since they're going to have to do a deal with the leagues directly, they're going to have to do a lot more technical work than other cable providers. It means that Verizon's going to have to know they'll have enough interest in these sports packages to make it worth their while to spend that money. As far as Center Ice goes... It's not the league that Verizon has to make an agreement with - it's InDemand. And InDemand is owned by Comcast, Cox and Time Warner. Connect your Verizon STB to a TV tuner in your PC. We do that with two different PCs here and record from Vista Media Center; most TV tuners provide their own TV recording software/program, and some can work from XP/Vista Media Center.

Note that depending on the TV tuner you have/get and how it's connected from the STB, you may not get full resolution HD. I only know of one PVR that does true HD recording in H.264/1989i format and that's this guy »www.hauppauge.com/site/products/···pvr.html

To me, the big clue will be to see if they add MLB Extra Innings for the 2009 season. If that happens, then I'd get my hopes up for the hockey season.

I suspect part of the problem has been the somewhat limited bandwidth they've had.
