What the...
»www.570news.com/news/topstory/ar···45_22548 Two wind turbines are now up at the Bay store at Conestoga Mall. In May, Ivanhoe Cambridge and the Hudson's Bay Company applied for a variance in the zoning by-law to install the turbines. But at the time, the city refused the application because of land compatibility issues and safety concerns. The company appealed the decision and now the city has now the installation, saying that safety concerns have been addressed. That includes adding an ice detection and monitoring system to ensure that the turbines will not operate if there is ice on them.
said by DKS:Urban areas are not places for wind turbines, Dumb idea. Right response by KW Council. seems that the KW council have come to their senses after all and taken the right decision. donoreo was that because of you
As soon as they go up I'll take some pics and report back.
Edit: I just added 3 pics of what they look like. They're not micro's nor the massive ones either, I'd say just the right size. A small step for the Bay and a huge step in understanding. All in all a big thumbs up for the Bay. -- It's all... part of the plan. |

Re: [With Pics] The Bay -Approved for wind turbines in Waterloo Those are not bad. Could not be too noisy either. |

And they look quite attractive actually -- almost like dynamic sculptures. Nice to see this happen despite the city trying to stop it. City councils have to be some of the most brain-dead bureaucracies on the planet. |

FeetsPremium join:2002-12-11 Hamilton, ON | reply to Stewy The Ancaster Zellers store has two of a similar design as well. (I'm sure plenty of other HBC stores have or will be adding them, too).
Now I just need one for my house. |
|
 | reply to Stewy Wow those are pretty cool. Can you get one of those for a house? --

Yes I know, not very likely to happen to 'the Bay's' installation (and the video is an extreme example of a failure):p -- ...A bitter ray of sunshine |

Those don't look so big, but why does it give me flashbacks to my kid's early childhood tv shows? |

This one is more appealing as the big tower is not necessary as it can be stuck on a roof top quite easily.

A typical residence type wind turbine (believe they can be tied to your electric meter and turn in backwards). »www.secondsourcepower.com/wind_p···ts_id=29 -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! | reply to Stewy How much power to these turbines output? What is the wind assessment for this location? Seems like a lot of PR rather than substantive energy reduction. -- All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing - Edmund Burke. "Walk the Talk". |

dirtyjefferAnons on ignore.Premium join:2002-02-21 London, ON | reply to Thane_Bitter i think that is an unrealistic example of what happens with a wind turbine (unless someone made their own)...it should NEVER be spinning that fast...wind turbines generally don't spin very fast at all, as most have gears inside to make the generator spin at a decent speed...perhaps this one was a "direct drive" model, i don't know, but either way, the blades are supposed to adjust to the wind speed, so if the wind is blowing hard, forcing the turbine to spin faster than its safe rotational speed, the blades should turn parallel with the wind, preventing them from "catching" the wind meaning they won't really spin at all...most are also equipped with some sort of brake to lock them during this type of scenario...of course, who knows what really happened and what brand was used in that video...also, it might even have been a staged video, made to "scare" people about wind turbines...our company is quite involved in wind turbines and that type of "failure" is unheard of any of the companies we deal with. -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

What is the wind assessment for this location? Seems like a lot of PR rather than substantive energy reduction. they look to be in the area of 3.5 kW in size...their small size allows them to be easily rotated with little wind speed, and their constant rotations do generate a decent amount of power as it is constantly in motion (for example, all night, when the store is closed, it can still generate power)...now keep in mind, you still require some wind, but the smaller the turbine, the less wind that is required to get it to operate at its optimal speed. -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/

dirtyjefferAnons on ignore.Premium join:2002-02-21 London, ON | reply to Stewy although you can't see those pics too closely, those turbines don't look like anything too "high end"...not just in terms of power, but i don't even think the blades have a pitch adjustment on them...perhaps the wind is generally minimal enough where it is to not require it (although, i think any safe turbine should have that feature). -- Best Marketplace Ever: »www.cbc.ca/marketplace/speed_bumps/
