It's just a matter of time...

...before the roof falls in on piracy. It's pretty obvious that copyright protected material can be tracked and those responsible for the illegal dissemination of same will be prosecuted. The more pirates that end up in jail, the better off society will be.

It's just a matter of time before people finally get wise to the fact that the record companies are ripping everyone off anyway. The retailer, The Artist, The buyer are all getting ripped off. Not to mention that the large music companies have a stronghold on what gets out to us. There is far better music that never gets out because the large music companies put all their eggs in one basket. They push it out to us by buying music time at radio stations and play it over and over until we get used to it. Ever happen to you? I agree that a law is a law but I don't remember 20 years ago of there having a law that only let you listen to a tape or record in five locations, or play it on only five devices. What's with this new found freedom of the RIAA that allows them to choose when and where we are allowed to listen to music. We should charge them for pushing music down our throats.

Re: It's just a matter of time...

There was a court case that decided cassette records of music were legal and just fine. VCR's had the same thing happen and it was ruled that VCR's were legal. Selling recorded cassettes or VCR tapes was illegal.

Indeed, but this begs the question: who's really ending up with the money collected here? I'd be willing to bet a significant amount of money that it isn't going to the artists...

If I remember correctly, your assumption that (generally speaking) artist don't see much (if any) of that money, has already been demonstrated by fact. Sorry, don't have any links but I seem to remember a story on here of a well known artist who never saw anything from RIAA.

sure maybe with the income the RIAA takes in they could chip in to house these criminals in our already strapped jail systems.

tape swapping i remember doing that in the late 80s early 90s, i also remember using dual VCRs and renting movies at blockbuster. people didnt make a big deal about it. today if you download one movie(and not upload) people look at you as if you just knocked off a bank.

You can make better quality copies but passing copies around has happened for a long time. People use to record their records to cassettes all the time and it was legal.

The one thing that has changed is the internet and file sharing which makes it so much easier to go look for whatever.
