 | Uverse DVR not Local? My broadband is not working, so I can't watch live TV, so I thought well I'll just watch the recorded programs.
The recorded programs showup, but the play doesn't do anything.
Is the DVR not local?
I came from DISH, and it's DVR was local (I could hear the hard drive), and with bad weather, I was able to watch the recorded programs. |
|
 | the DVR is local, but requires access to AT&T's DRM servers in order to play recorded content. |
|
 | reply to jonsdad Outstanding!
I.E. it has to phone home and report to the death star everything you watch.
I've also read that the whole house DVR can't be used to pause live TV on other STB's. How's that DVR? |

|
 | reply to Enlightener I only had it for 4 days before the service outage, but it can pause live tv, but only on the TV with the DVR.
Supposely, the Total Home DVR is just an software/firmware upgrade. (It says there is no new equipment to install)
It's suppose to roll out by end of this year. I've heard that it can only pause live tv on the TV attached to the DVR.
The AT&T's promotion doesn't mention the pausing of the live TV. It just mentions the ability to watch recorded TV from many different places.
I guess we'll find out once it's rolled out.

1 edit | reply to apeface Read what I said again Apeface. I said that I've read ( and someone else read the samething ) that it can't pause live TV on *OTHER* STB's.
Are you in a position to say what we've read on the internet isn't accurate? If not...
That's hardly a whole house DVR since pausing and rewinding live TV is a critical function of a DVR. It's really nothing more then a remote recording scheduler and media extender for content already recorded. |
|
2 edits | reply to jonsdad BTW, I was recalling what I read in another forum. The actual PR announcement goes into a lot of detail and it sounds quite promising. However I don't see it saying you can pause live TV on any STB in the house. Only recorded content.

AT&T U-verse Total Home DVR customers can:
Watch HD and SD DVR recordings on other connected TVs in the home. In addition to your DVR, you can access, play, pause, rewind and fast forward any recorded SD or HD program on up to seven additional U-verse-connected TVs. All U-verse DVRs and receivers are HD-capable.
Pause a recorded show and pick up where you left off in another room.
Play back multiple, independent viewings of the same recorded show on different TVs.
Play back up to four recorded shows at once. Up to three can be HD recorded programs.
Watch up to five HD programs simultaneously throughout the home, including two live HD programs and three recorded HD programs.
Record more of the show you want to see with soft padding, which automatically adds 1 minute to the beginning and 2 minutes to the end of each pre-scheduled recording.
Organize recorded content by series. Series recordings will be grouped as a single heading in the recorded TV menu, making it easier for customers to manage and select their recorded programs.
Store up to 37 hours of HD content or up to 133 hours of SD content, which is more storage than most cable providers' DVRs.
Record up to four programs at once on a single DVR another feature that is exclusive to AT&T U-verse TV.
Set the DVR while on the go from your PC or wireless phone. With AT&T Yahoo!® Web and Mobile Remote Access to DVR, you can schedule recordings from any Web-connected PC or compatible mobile phone (wireless service charges apply) by using your AT&T High Speed Internet account. |

Whether or not that's what is getting released to end users in the beginning, I don't know.
FiOs whdvr doesnt pause or rewind live tv either. |

 | reply to jonsdad Thanks for attacking my reading comprehension and being pedantic about whether it `can` (development) or it `will` (production). |

apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 1 edit | reply to jonsdad Whether it can or will be able to function like a regular DVR is not minutiae. I have seen it do it on the network but I do not know if it will be released to production now or in the future.
Cute attempt at an insult. |

apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 | reply to jonsdad I agree and I have helped many people on here with their service problems and answered many questions as best I can, without being hostile, rude, or unprofessional. My unique position allows for more access than many others in the direct forum.
I am not on this board in any official capacity, I do it on my own time.
However, there are people simply troll this forum to get a rise out of people. |

| reply to jonsdad So going back to the original topic, if you loose your broadband connection, for what ever reason, with U-Verse, you cannot watch ANY recorded content? That seems odd. I would love to one day switch from D* but the reasons keep piling up, for why I shouldn't! -- Women think they are clever just because they can fake an orgasm for a relationship, whats the big deal a man can fake a whole relationship for an orgasm!!!! |

apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 1 edit | reply to jonsdad I think I am going to go test that right after my shows get done recording. I'm curious now.
I know some channels have drm keys that dont allow you to record or burn from them, but I didnt think the dvr stopped working if you took it off the network, as far as stuff you already recorded. |

 | reply to jonsdad Apeface-
You are the one that said "You read wrong." You attacked me, not the other way around. Get it straight.
I then found a citation that showed it's not a production feature and you used your position to observe non-production functionality to engage in double speak.
Customers ( people who utimatly pay your salary ) don't care about what it can do in the lab, we care about what it does in the field.
So instead of claiming I'm a troll and attacking me, why don't you just try to be a professional. |

1 edit | reply to Hookem99 said by Hookem99:I would love to one day switch from D* but the reasons keep piling up, for why I shouldn't! That's exactly the situation I'm in. I have U-Verse MAXX internet only, Vonage, DirecTV and AT&T Wireless IPhone 3g service.
I was on the fence for switching my VOIP back to U-Verse but it doesn't have the email voicemail feature. My wife has an IPhone 3G so if some feature comes along that integrates with that I'd bring my business back.
I also want to get another HD-DVR from DirecTV but I'm not thrilled about spending another $200 and renewing my committment. It sounds like a no brainer to go to U-Verse with it's total home DVR but when you start reading up on it you find that while it has some really novel features, certain baseline features are just missing in it's current and foreseable future.
It doesn't help that AT&T employees spread FUD by claiming that it can do something that it can't really do in the field. |

| reply to jonsdad Enlightener: Please lighten up a bit. I repsect your position, but I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill. apeface has been a very valuable asset to this forum, and has helped a few people resolve some issues that would be tough or impossible to convey through the normal support channels. Being able to relay information directly to people on the inside can be worth its weight in gold. I enjoy reading about things going on behind the scenes.
I would hate to see that stop over a simple miscommunication about a feature. I really don't think his intention was to attack you or your reading comprehension skills, or to spread misinformation AT&T's products. He may be an employee but since he's not posting in an official capacity, I just take what he says with a grain of salt, like any other human being here. His attitude towards seeing problems posted around here and looking into them on his end is about as professsional as it gets.

apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 | reply to jonsdad Ok, it tested the the dvr last night. Started a show I had recorded and then unplugged the ethernet cable and is stopped working after about 2 minutes.
So I guess it does have to be connected. |
|
1 edit | Odd, so the uplink has to be connected the whole time, not just at the start of a recording playback? |
|
apeface join:2000-09-16 Mckinney, TX kudos:3 | reply to jonsdad Looks that way. I let it play for about 5 minutes and pulled the plug. It went on for a minute or two and the screen with the options menu came up. |
