Re: How About Austin, Texas ?

No. Austin is not nice! We have too many immigrants already. It would be better for you to stay in SoCal.

Now that I've got that out of my system.

It gets hotter than heck here. It sometimes gets cold - as in below freezing. Traffic is the pits. There are reports that we have the worst traffic in the country and it's not going to get any better. Every time they build a new road, a bunch of people from California or Yankees move in and clog things up again. Seriously, there are a lot of people moved here from California. Lots.

Re: How About Austin, Texas ?

I started to post earlier almost exactly what McSummation See Profile did. I decided not to knowing someone else would and I wouldn't be the "bad" Texan!

Yes -- Austin is really nice -- I've been here for 30 years and no matter what we do people still keep moving here and we keep growing. Do not expect any deals on housing. Even thought the market is off and sales are slow, the sales prices are up 4 - 5% from last year. Economy is still good although job growth is definitely slowing.

It does get hotter than heck here!

If you decide to come this way please bring rain!!!

Ooop's, too late. I already bought a brand-new home in the Round Rock / Hutto area....Star Ranch, as a matter of fact.

My son plays football at UT, so i bought the new house so he can live in for now. I figure i'll retire in a few more years, then maybe i'll sell my house here and then go live like a king in Texas.

Who knows though, i love it here in Westlake Village, CA.. SoCal has the best weather in the country..:+)

I really enjoy living here. I'm a little bummed out that I'm down to my last few months of school and most of the work that I have been looking at is in Odessa, TX. More than anything I like the people and the general atmosphere.

Re: How About Austin, Texas ?

alg See Profile, believe me, Austin (and the surrounding area) was a lot better 20-30 years ago. Back then there were a lot of hippies still here that knew that "laid back" was the way to live. Now, everybody seems to be in the "get out of my way or I'll run over you" mode. We used to be able to go into Austin to movies, plays, dinner out, etc. Now, we don't even bother to try.

Re: How About Austin, Texas ?

I don't doubt you at all about that. It makes me blue to see all the high rises going up and to have places like Guadalupe St. transformed into a corporate run outdoor shopping mall that is nothing like it used to be and every time I see those things I realize that Austin is being transformed into just another city. That said there are still pockets of "old" Austin around and while there may not be as many as there used to be it still beats Houston (and Odessa) by a long shot.

Austin will always beat Houston and Odessa shouldn't even be in the same sentence!

The surrounding towns around Austin are not bad at all.

You still are close enough to the "big city" to have all of the conveniences, but still have some of the small town benefits.

Austin, and surrounding areas, also have the advantage to being close to many other cities and natural attractions.

I'm just so sick of reading posts of people crying in their milk over CHANGE. It REALLY pissed me off. The Statesman is probably one of the worst.

Deal with it cause it's not going away. The "old Austin" sounded like shit and nothing that I would have been interested in. I'm glad there are tons of condos going up downtown and that we have a vibrant and safe downtown. The food, weather, people and overall quality of life are amazing compared to other places I have lived. Yes, traffic is bad, and not being able to buy a beer before noon on Sunday is one of the dumbest things in the history of mankind; but those are minor annoyances. There is something for everyone even if it isn't downtown. Hell, even the air quality is great!

Now that I am done offending all the old farts here, I really, truly do love Austin and even if I do end up in Dallas yet this year(money talks), we already decided to keep a condo in Austin. Yes, I'm an ex-Yankee.

...and if you really have been here 20-30 years, have you EVER lived in a big city? People are super behaved and super friendly in public around here. I can't say that about any of the other places I use to live in.

I've always heard good things about Austin.

Anywhere has to be better than here.

Re: How About Austin, Texas ?

After Hurricane Katrina, Our company relocated in Austin until New Orleans was open back for business (3 months)
We really enjoyed Austin. Many of us didn't want to come back... Some of them actually quit their job with us so they could stay.
