| You're the one asserting that Usenet is dying. Let's see the links substantiating that.
The following link leads to an article that talks about Newsgroup article numbers reaching their limit.

Its well known that Usenet is clogged with Spam hence the increase in articles.

First of all, somebody must have misconfigured software.. article numbering is a per group basis.. that is each newsgroup starts at 1 and counts up.. to reach that limit, an individual group has to reach 2,147,483,647 articles.. that's two billion individual articles.. Only a poorly configured and neglected server could possibly reach that.
Oh and you can reset the article index, thus eliminating the problem in the first place. Or just not carry the warez/mp2/video/porn newsgroups.. |

1 edit | reply to axelrose Listen when someone answers your questions - no matter if it is the answer you want or not... accept it and move on. I have no reason to lie to you - and all you have done is rant wildly.
2GB of newsgroup access that was includer for NO COST is going away.
Since it was a no cost item, your bill will not be lowered - period. If you look at it objectively, 2GB of usenet is a waste of your amd my time to begine with, so who cares if they kill it off?
And yes! Comcast HSI is still the same price it has been for at least the 5 years I have had service. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

Of course they are valid. Just as the person that wants anchovies on every pizza a pizza store produces is valid. Unfortunately Business sense prevails.

Any other news server, simply expire very old articles and rebuild the overview database every 4 or 5 years..
Basically that article is a way of telling client maintainers to change their software or it may be broken on giganews. |

They are no longer going to give you 2GB per month. They are NOT killing *ALL* usenet, just the free 2GB they were providing. Nothing is going to stop you from paying for Easynews or a REAL account from Giganews and downloading 'til ya puke!

| reply to funchords As did AT&T, which removed the entire 'alt.binaries.*' hierarchy from their NNTP servers.
Oddly, Cuomo brags that he "forced" AOL to "toe the line", as well; yet AOL had already discontinued NNTP service a couple of years before he forced them to. Does he have a supply of 'thiotimoline' stashed somewhere? -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to axelrose According to some, Comcast did not even offer NNTP service until after they bought AT&T Broadband Internet.
So, in that sense, they are just returning to the service levels which originally existed (apart from speed increases for the same fee over the years). -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to beerbum said by beerbum :You know what is really sad? The actual costs involved to run usenet - minus the binary groups - are minimal.. A couple quad core computers and one or two TB for storage could handle it - with a greater than 30 day retention - again, minus the binary groups. Then what happened to all of the free NNTP providers? Why did Supernews sell out to Giganews?
You have to consider the Internet access, too. NNTP providers need access to transit, and sufficient transit capacity to handle the access load on their servers. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

That too, Axel apparently thinks Comcast is going to be blocking access to newsgroups... WRONG! No, I think Comcast has just removed the 2GB Usenet service they offered via Giganews. I'm aware of the fact that Usenet still exists and am aware that you can purchase a Giganews account separate from Comcast's previous offering. I should know because I've had a Giganews account for 3 years. But it was nice having that extra 2GB so you could save 2GB use on the private Giganews account. -- I have been very charitable while poor and kind to people even while undergoing enormous personal pain.
