said by beerbum :so will Comcast be reducing our bills since the equivalent service from Giganews is $7.99 per month? hahahaha I doubt it. I doubt it too. Comcast is just like the gasoline stations that have increased the price of a gallon of gasoline while the price of oil has dropped more than $50 over that same period of time.
Comcast is going to get every penny they legally can steal from us.

I'm guessing here, but I'm pretty sure you can call in and request that they kill your service and they won't be able to "steal" another penny from you.

Never ending reductions in service with the price staying the same or even going higher is pseudo theft.
Imagine if your public school system announced a property tax increase while at the same time announced they were going to increase class size and fire 25% of the teachers. Wouldn't that be a 'form' of theft?
When does anything with regards to Comcast's actions become wrong and in need of being more regulated than they are today?
Comcast should have to live under regulations similar to regulations for Bond issues with municipalities. -- I have been very charitable while poor and kind to people even while undergoing enormous personal pain. | reply to axelrose Hmmm... I'm still paying $52.95 as I have been for... 4(?) years now. Instead of the 4mbps I initially got for the $10 extra, I am now getting 16mbps.

said by axelrose :So you're saying that all Comcast customers have seen an increase in speeds with a freeze on the monthly fees? All? Perhaps not. Most? Absolutely! Even the "normal" Comcast HSI customer is getting 6mbps today. Back in 2003, that same $42.95 got me 1500kbps.
See pic. This is what is available HERE in Hercules - *NOW*.
Remember, I was paying $42.95 for 1500kbps in 2003.
Looks a bit better today, no?
The first paragraph states:
"Stop crawling the web and start burning rubber with scorching speeds up to 4 times faster than 1.5 Mbps..."
4 x 1.5 = 6 - right?
4 times what I was getting in 2003? What is the roll to price? $42.95?
Uhm, yeah.
EDIT: Clarification

I do not see how this is a controversial view. thanks Yes but as others have pointed out we've also seen a huge increase in speeds over the same period without a price hike. So actually we've seen more services technically. So losing NNTP access might be seen, at least by some, to not be such a big deal.
I will say that you have had issues with your connection for a long time. Took many, many posts here and I think you finally got some resolution. You're probably one of the ones who may be a little tainted, and with good reason, against Comcast. Certainly not faulting your opinion however. |

1 edit | It's not NNTP access, it's 2GB of NNTP per month.
Anyone on Comcast is free to pay for the news service of choice and continue downloading *news*.
2GB was a waste of time and everyone knows it. It was such a waste of time most people that knew what NGs were, didn't even bother with it!
Hence, Comcast is trashing it.
Our friend here thinks he will be losing out on something - and that he should perhaps get a reduction in monthly charges. I'll type this as nicely as I can...
AINT GONNA HAPPEN!
Reality is, the pricing is still the same and no amount of complaining is going to change Comcast's mind. No! You will not see any reduction in your bill, sorry! I never used the service, should they give me 5 years of kickbacks? -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

| reply to comcastcares I don't actively use the newsgroups, but this is the first I am hearing about Comcast discontinuing newsgroup service. I wonder why they wouldn't have notified customers through a notice in the mail or via a notice on the monthly bill. Comcast sent an e-mail about the bandwidth cap, which affects Internet service, so following the same "logic", wouldn't a discontinuation of newsgroups be something that affects Internet service? |

It wasn't until later on they decided to outsource to Giganews.. |

| reply to tcope said by tcope :So Comcast offered Internet service without Usenet when they first started? Also, your statement is flawed in that the cost to deliver service has become less expensive. Granted, service has increased as well. But let's look at reality for a moment... when Usenet started it too very little resources. It's resources have increased and so has the cost of Internet access. You really think Comcast has never increased it's price due to the resources of Usenet? You know what is really sad? The actual costs involved to run usenet - minus the binary groups - are minimal..
A couple quad core computers and one or two TB for storage could handle it - with a greater than 30 day retention - again, minus the binary groups.
All they needed to do was drop the binaries.. Although I bet that was not an option available from Giganews..
Believe it or not, usenet was never intended to be a file service - it is a discussion service. |

Comcast (legacy) and AT&T Broadband merged, becoming AT&T Comcast, and then simply Comcast. That would be early 2001.. I was working for AT&T when Comcast gobbled us up.. From the beginning Comcast offered usenet on their own servers.. |

The marketing costs involved in telling X million customers that you have removed something that only a VERY small percentage used is not worth it from a business perspective. Its better to keep costs low for the average subscriber.
Usenet is dead...those that used it avidly in most cases already had a 3rd party subscription.
