| Earthlink DSL Speed over Qwest / Covad line
I have serious problems with Earthlink DSL over our Qwest line. There are three problems: 1. I have been told that my house is too far away from the last head station (or whatever the term) to have fast access - they downgraded my connection to around 800KB. (Covad had reconditioned the line) 2. Even at that speed, after few days, the speed intermittently goes down. When I do ping, I see individual times go up to several seconds. When I reboot my modem, all is fine...... 3. Even after rebooting, I have at times short outages (from a few seconds to minutes) where the modem shows that the DSL connection is ok (Light is on), but I cannot access anything - timeouts.
I did run the line quality test on this web page. A typical result shows a problem at the medium bandwidth stream with 4% or more loss. The big latency adder is actually the last hop to my home address (h-xx-x-xx-xxx-dnctco56.dynamic.covad.net) I have complained to EL several times - every time they have Covad recondition the line, and after some time it is bad again.
I am considering to switch to Qwest DSL. What would that change? What can be the cause of this problem? I assume it is NOT the wiring in the house, as I still can talk on the line at all times Any input is appreciated!!!! |

It sounds like you may just be too far from the CO. -- Lightning Bolt Technologies |

| I guess that was deserved! I am not that familiar with the technological details - therefore I was assuming that maybe Qwest would connect closer to the house. I am still confused that Qwest says we are good for 20MBps - they told me there should not be a distance problem |

Covad's DSLAM is usually located only in the CO and they do not have access to the ILEC's RT boxes. -- History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. -- Dwight D. | thanks for the feedback. Funny enough, yesterday the line ran without any problems - and at night, EL called and asked whether the connection was better. They stated that Covad had 'done something' - but they could not tell me what. What can they have done? I would like to get to a point where I understand what is going on instead of spending days getting the runaround and then 'a miracle happens'. |

I would like to get to a point where I understand what is going on instead of spending days getting the runaround and then 'a miracle happens'. Welcome to my world. I can't begin to tell you how many times that I have seen both DSL and T1 circuits mysteriously stop malfunctioning after a telco tech simply does an intrusive test and then puts the circuit back on-line.
