| New VZ promotion: *FREE* updgrade to 3.0Mbps (from 768K) ? I just got a postcard from Verizon. It claims that because I'm such a loyal customer that the're going to upgrade me from my current 768Kbps DSL service to 3.0Mbps--at no cost to me! OK, Verizon, I did actually grin and have semi-pleasant thoughts toward you (for about two seconds, anyway).
Anyone seeing any pigs fly? Or is Verizon's marketing department just worried about retention of customers like me whose contract has expired and have other options (i.e., Comcr*p).
Anyone else get this offer? More importantly, are there any 'gotchas'??? | |

| I'd take that deal in a minute. I've been having a lot of trouble with my DSL (copper, 768K, cheapest I can find so I don't leave 'em) service lately. I told them that if they could no longer maintain my service, I'd be happy to let them replace it with FIOS, but that I was happy with my present speed and cost, so I didn't want to pay more for it.
They said "sorry." I guess being a faithful customer doesn't help here in Virginia.
By the way, I've had absolutely the worst customer service from Verizon than I think I've had from any company recently. They eventually manage to fix my problems, but they won't admit that there's such a thing as an intermittent condition, so no, it ISN'T OK if they test the line when I call and it checks out. | |

| Chances are the reason you are having trouble with your DSL and the reason they won't upgrade you are the same....you're too far for it.
Couple of things come to mind about this move. First, does the "free" upgrade end after a year, 6mo., etc.? Second, could this be a move to get as many people as possible up to the higher speeds, since everyone whose line supports it would have no reason not to, then just dump the lower speed altogether, making the 3/768 the new low speed plan, but at a higher price? Not talking immediately of course, but over the course of the next year or two. Combine that with further FIOS deployment and you see the first move on the DSL side in phasing it out. | |

Upgrading to a higher plan has always been free but this sounds like some type of marketing strategy to hopefully get people to think they are getting something for nothing.
I'll be pissed if I find out they are upgrading people to the 3.0 plan and not changing their monthly rate but, I don't think that will be the case. | |

It is now three weeks + later 10/5/08 and nothing has been done. I called the number they had on the card if there were any questions (tec support) and as usual got an female Indian who I couldn't understand and had to hang up. Why don't they have English speaking people who you can understand to give tec support? I have been with Verizon about 3yrs. | |

| UPDATED! Yes, it looks like they did upgrade me. I'm now getting 1501 down/373 up from the Speed Test. Not exactly the 3000 down that they 'promised' me, but I'm pretty far from the CO, so maybe it's just my line.
(Four out of six towns around me have had FiOS for a while now and NO plans in sight for my town. I'm dying for it! And it's not like I'm out in the boondocks either--I'm near the center of the Boston metro area!)
I haven't gotten a new Verizon bill yet, so we'll see if they try to sneak in any new charges.
They haven't notified me of the upgrade _completion_ yet either, FWIW. | |

1 edit | Is this a way to get people off the DSL for life promotion they had last year. You had to sign up for two years at a price of $15 a month for 768k/128k DSL. And as long as you keep the service you can keep that speed and price for life.
Although when they switch over to fiber the promotion ends which at some point will happen whether the person want sit or not since at some point they plan on wiring everything up to fiber. At least that is what the notice said that my girlfriend received. | |

I've been with Verizon for close to four years now! Also the 1.5Mbps speed is the gotcha of copper, not Verizon (unless of course Verizon messes up and provisions you wrong).
